Vincent

What the hell?

I rip open the door of the car and nearly throw myself onto the street. Where the fuck are we? I glance around, taking it all in, the brownstones, sparkling holiday lights, a park with gas lights flickering. It’s like a little freaking storybook fairyland. I expect to see some princess walking out of one of these brownstones whistling a tune with a bunch of little animals following after her.

But the image can easily turn bloody. All of these low buildings crowded together in this quaint little city in a city are just as easily the perfect setting for a mob hit.

Lou, my bodyguard, must think the same thing, because he rushes around from the passenger’s seat to the back of the car to stand near me on the street. He adjusts the lapel of his overcoat. “Boss, this place isn’t so great …” He’s glancing up at what I noticed—low roofs, easy for amateur sharpshooters, and way too many windows, patios, and doors for us to prepare for any surprise attacks. And if it really was Gio …

He knows where she lives.

I need to break something. But what? What? I storm up to Eleni’s building and grab a tree from its pot and rip it out, tossing it onto the street. It’s unsatisfying, but at least it’s something.

“Hey!” Eleni is out of the car and next to me. “You can’t just do that.”

“Get back in the car, Eleni.”

“No. This is my home, and you can’t just be a big bull—”

I turn toward her sharply, and with my arms wide and chest heaving, I charge at her, backing her against the car. I’ve never had to control my anger for fear of hurting a woman, I never would. But I’ve got nothing against scaring one. Especially for her own good. “I said, get in the car!” My voice is louder than I meant it to be.

She does what I say.

Taking a huge breath, I exhale out clenched teeth. I bang my fists on the top of the car and lean forward, thinking.

Lou stands behind me, ready for anything that could happen next.

“Okay, prioritize,” I mumble so only I can hear. I need to find Gio and find out what actually happened that night. I need to know why I was brought in on bogus charges tonight and what that means. And, glancing into the back of the car I can just make out her silhouette, above all, I need to keep Eleni safe.

But why? Standing up, I rub my abdomen with the side of my fist. Only because I owe her, of course. The DeSantis family makes sure we keep business as business, and we don’t harm innocent civilians.

A flash of the Metropolitan Massacre flashes through my brain.

Except when everything goes horribly wrong. That’s why I owe her to keep her safe. And even if that night hadn’t happened five years ago, I would still do my best to protect her. Maybe I’m old fashioned, but I’d give a man a warning but leave him to fend for himself.
