Caitlin paused as she also looked to the door. Was he worried that someone else might be following him, or was he happy in the belief that no one would disturb them in this space in the dead of night?

She opted for the latter as she dragged her fingers through his hair and tugged him closer. Their lips crashed together as she held on fast, and Caitlin savored his kiss as she felt him flinch and turned her head away from his mouth.

“Did I hurt you?” she asked.

Valerio shook his head as he licked his lips.

“No. I liked it. As you were.”

And Caitlin sighed as she rose to the challenge.

Pursing her lips again, she met his mouth and felt his warm breath melt upon her tongue at the taste of his kiss. She wrapped her arms around his neck and fell with him back to the battered mattress as he reached under her shirt and started to fondle her flesh.

His left hand suddenly stopped at a groan mingled with his kiss, and their eyes met once more.

“What… oh. Your hand.”

She pulled away and gently touched the bandage that finally brought his bleeding to a stop. Gazing at the covered wound, she released a heavy sigh.

“I’m sorry about that,” she continued.

“Why?” he asked. “Not your fault.”

“Right,” she said with a soft snort, and he was quick to press his fingers under her chin.

“Don’t say that,” he insisted in a gentle whisper.

“But if I hadn’t run away… and it’s not just that.”

She sat up on the edge of the bed and felt him follow as he inched closer to her side.

“It’s because you knew the shooters,” he said.

“Something like that,” she said, reaching back and tying her rumpled locks into a messy bun atop her head. “You would have been better off never seeing me again.”

“Not sure if I agree with that,” Valerio murmured. With one finger, he started to trace the line of her neck. Caitlin shuddered under his touch and seemed on the verge of sliding back to the bed when she suddenly, furiously shook her head.

“And here I thought I was on the right side of this.”

“What do you mean?” he asked. She said nothing for several seconds, swallowing hard and trying to find the right words, not wanting to screw one more thing up.

“I know my hands are far from clean,” she started. “Enzo knew it, too. Probably why he recommended me for the job in the first place.”

She looked back to see Valerio waiting, watching, saying nothing. The nearness of his body made her uneasy. Standing swiftly, she began to pace the room.

“But see, I… I didn’t think that I was really in league with the likes of you,” she continued. “No offense. That was how I justified it to myself.”

“I don’t follow,” Valerio said, and Caitlin felt her cheeks grow flushed.

“So maybe I hacked the university’s mainframe,” she went on. “Maybe Grant and Pete did the same thing. But I never thought any of us were really hurting anyone.
