The next morning I did not awake with Cooper in my bed, but he was still in my house, and—was that hammering?

I rolled over and checked the clock. It was well past the normal time I got up. Sleepily, I slipped from bed and put on my robe, enjoying how my body was sore in places it usually wasn’t. After brushing my teeth, I went to investigate the noise and found Cooper on a small ladder outside the front door, fiddling with something over the top of the door.

“Cooper?”

He peeped down at me, “Oh hey, good morning, Sunshine,” he said with a broad smile.

“Good morning,” I replied, thrilled with the way he eyed my breast at the low neckline of my robe. I was so happy Tess thought to pack this, but then again at the thought of Tess a fresh wave of ancient guilt washed over me.

“What’s wrong?” Cooper asked, noticing my expression as he climbed down the ladder and came inside.

I shook my head, pasting on a sunny smile. No need to ruin the moment by bringing up Tess. “It’s nothing—other than I woke up in a bed that didn’t have you in it.”

He grinned at me, pulling me into his arms and giving me a sweet but thorough kiss. When he released me, I said, “Nice attempt at diversion, but you still didn’t explain what you were doing to my house.”

I could see an ornery twinkle in his eye as he said, “Why don’t we make some breakfast to fuel up for the day and I will tell you all about it.”

I wasn’t sure about his evading the question but breakfast certainly sounded good, so I reluctantly let him lead me to the kitchen where we gathered up some bacon, eggs and some frozen hash browns I had in the freezer.

As Cooper scrambled some eggs, he asked, “You got any Spam?”

I laughed, “You really have acclimated to the island life, haven’t you?”

He shrugged. “What? It’s delicious with eggs. Are you seriously telling me you don’t have a can on hand?” he asked with raised eyebrows.

I answered him by walking over to the small pantry and producing a can.

“Atta girl,” he smiled as he grabbed it from me, “We might just make an island girl out of you yet.”

I smiled even though it caused a brief tightness in my chest that I wasn’t interested in examining too closely.

We made breakfast in companionable silence, enjoying bumping into one another in the small kitchen and finding excuses to touch one another. Cooper was the only man I couldn’t seem to keep my hands off of and now that we’d reunited, my hands had a renewed thirst for him.

I refrained from asking about the hammering and the ladder until we sat with our breakfast at the small kitchen table. “Alright Mr. Handyman—which is a totally hot look on you, by the way—what gives with the banging around this morning?”

He hastily wiped at his mouth before leveling his gaze at me. “Just hear me out.
