Chapter 14

Theo

I stared at my image in the mirror, doing a once-over to make sure I was presentable to my guests.

After drying off and taking a hot shower to get the chill out of my bones, I put on a light blue shirt and black tie, the black blazer and slacks acceptable for the reception. William had been waiting for me in the garage upon my return, explaining Josef's decision that he would be better suited to care for Lily and Kat for the time being—letting William fill in yet again, if I approved.

I did. Wholeheartedly.

While I couldn't give Josef the time off to grieve—he wouldn't take it—having him with the two women would be good for him, help him recover. The connection between him and Lily was obvious to anyone who saw it.

I checked my tie one last time, the morning's briefing rerunning in my mind in an attempt to push out the funeral—or at least put it into an invisible box in my mind, to be opened later.

The lunch reception would be the same format as last night, the guests likely a bit more muted until they could escape and return to their homelands—or stay around for the coronation.

Right now, I didn't give a damn who stayed and who went.

William put his hand to his earpiece, forehead furrowing.

"What's wrong?"

He shrugged me off, listening intently.

The hair on the back of my neck prickled in alarm at the unusual behavior.

"What's wrong?" I growled.

This time it took.

William lowered his hand, giving me a wan smile. "Everything's fine. A small incident on the way back to the palace involving the guests. It was a general call, giving everyone information about the event. No security issues. Nothing for you to concern yourself with."

"Anything to do with my guests is something I need to concern myself with." I glared at him. "What was it?"

He hesitated and I knew, I knew it had something to do with Kick.

"A little girl darted out in front of one of the cars. It was able to stop in time, but she still made contact with the vehicle and needed medical attention. She's in hospital, recovering with a broken leg." He shook his head. "One of the guests left her car and went to help, causing security concerns. Josef took control, made sure it all worked out."

"Who was the guest?"

William paused, just long enough to confirm my fears.

"Ah... Miss Kiski." He gave me a wistful look.

"Of course." I rubbed my forehead. "Right then. Bring me a full report on the girl—I want her to get the best medical care. Make sure her family's protected from the media, no reporters swarming the hospital and causing trouble." I forced myself to uncurl my fingers, nails digging into the palms. "Right. Let's go."

Part of me was relieved that the incident was minor—someone getting hurt or killed at the funeral either as an accident or part of a larger terrorist plot was the type of horrific scenario Tollingham had laid out in his briefing, justifying the high security.
