Chapter 9
âOh,â he mumbled after a few minutes. âI thought he had just had an accident.â
He looked up slowly and stared at the wall behind us.
âIâm sorry,â Elspeth said. âFor your loss.â
âWell,â he said slowly. âI suppose thatâs life.â
âYes,â I hummed. âUnfortunately, it does happen.â
âSo, is that all youâve come here to tell me?â he asked.
âIf we could have a few words, too, then that would be brilliant,â I said.
âJust a formality, of course,â Elspeth jumped in. âYou arenât being officially questioned or anything.â
âAlright,â the man agreed.
He stood up slowly from his spot behind the desk and walked over to the set of three chairs that formed the makeshift waiting area in the reception. âPlease take a seat.â
I could see what Mrs. Wallace meant when she said there wasnât much to him. Cunningham might have been smiling, but I wasnât sure. Yet another person in this investigation that was hard to read.
He sat down in one of the green chairs and waited for us to take ours.
âI would offer you a coffee, but the kettle isnât working,â he told us. âThereâs a water cooler if youâre thirsty, though.â
âItâs quite alright,â I smiled.
Usually I would accept the drink, but I could tell that the man we were questioning was not interested in the role of being the host. He had pointed to the cooler rather than offering to fetch us a cup, and I could understand why Wallace had been reluctant to let his partner spend too much time alone.
âIâm okay, too, thank you,â Elspeth said.
âItâs tepid anyway,â the man shrugged. âProbably best if you didnât, if I'm being honest.â
âWeâre here just to discuss your relationship with Jack, the business, those kinds of things really,â I said.
âOh,â the man though. âUm, okay. So, like what? Shall I start with my name? Itâs Robert Cunningham.â
I pulled out my notepad, and Elspeth followed suit.
âYou donât mind, do you?â I asked and held up the pad and paper.
âNot at all,â he said.
âWhy donât you tell us about yourself?â I suggested.
There arenât many people who arenât happy to discuss their lives, and for me, it was a useful tool to uncover how someone worked both mentally and physically. There was no such thing as too much information in my book, especially in a murder case.
âIâm fifty-seven years old,â he replied after staring at the wall for several moments. âIâm a Taurus, umm...â
He raised his eyebrows as if to say that was all the information he could give us.
âAnd are you married?â Elspeth prompted him. âDo you have any children or anything?â
âNo,â he mumbled. âIâm not married, and I donât have any children. I live alone.â
He wasnât a bad looking man, and neither did he seem to have a personality that would warrant being alone.
âOut of choice?â Elspeth dared to ask.
âWell, I am a homosexual male,â he stated. âSo I would have obviously never had a wife.â
âSorry,â she corrected herself. âI shouldâve been more inclusive,â
âNot your fault,â he smiled. âPeople tend to assume that someone over a certain age has to be straight.
