Chapter 16
OâNeill got home before ten oâclock, turned on the radio, filled a tumbler with Scotch, and read Herman Melvilleâs Billy Budd. The book didnât enthrall him, so he put it aside and found the binder of copies he had made. It included Ryderâs case summary, Garciaâs summary, an accompanying map, and a listing of interviews. Before digging in further, he remembered his promise to call Harry back at nine fifteen. He put his shoes on, walked to Howard Johnsonâs, and called Harry Bartholomewâs residence. Sandra answered the phone.
âSeamus, you should have called hours ago.â
âI got caught up in something. Is your father around?â
He could hear her whisper, âHe sounds drunk.â
âSeamus, I was wondering whether you would call,â Harry said, pausing. âYou think this Larry Marsh killed the girl from the University? According to our client, he was the murdered girlâs boyfriend. Can you prove he killed her?â
âNot yet, but weâll get there.â
âI want more information but prefer coming to Madison rather than reviewing a written report. You and Mr. Ryder can explain your theory, and we can decide what to do next. Until then, I want you to hold off on sharing information with the police. Iâm busy tomorrow and Thursday but could make a Friday meeting. You and Mr. Ryder could familiarize me with your ideas on the case. We could meet at your office at, say, noon?â
OâNeill mumbled his agreement and hung up. He paused for a moment, considering whether he should head home or walk by Janeâs house. âDonât be an idiot,â he said, and he started home. He considered spending his remaining three dollars at the Nitty Gritty bar, but he needed the money for laundry, so he made a second wise decision and continued home.
