“They’ve been violating the Deadpact?” Tivani yelled.

Samuud shook her head. “No. From the reports from our spies in Stonecore, this monstrosity is driven with manpower and alchemy. Mostly manpower. It is Stonecore, after all. They have a vast supply of people and the inclination to think of them as disposable.”

Vsara had been impatiently waiting for her turn to speak, but her eyebrows shot up and she said, “Preposterous! They’ve created a machine that could assault Highreach without the songs or deadtech? This thing can honestly ascend into the mountains!?

“So the reports claim,” Samuud said calmly. “Their presence here is largely a diversion, I believe, so that we cannot mobilize against this…thing.” She let this proclamation hang heavy in the air, but eventually, she sat forward with a huge smile on her face and said, “The Lofty Tribunal has been agonizing over this predicament for the last few days, unable to find anything resembling a real solution. That is, until, we learned of a particularly interesting development.” She looked at me and her smile grew even wider. “A Runesinger has been rumored to have appeared in our lands. Should such a person be real, and should they attain the power of the highsong…”

Tivani gasped. “Stonecore’s siege weapon hasn’t crossed over Longfall Span yet! If Alex awakened the highsong and we could make it there before the machine did…”

“Precisely.”

“Hey now, hang on,” I said. “What are we talking about?”

Samuud waved a hand eastward. “The only way into the mountains that such a large machine could take — it is very large by all accounts — is over a bridge known as Longfall Span. It’s the only route robust enough for such a thing. The bridge hasn’t been operational in decades, as it operates on the highsong. Should you awaken it, you could lift the bridge and block Stonecore’s access. There would be no way to lower the bridge again without you. And while the loss of the route would be problematic for us, it’s still better than the alternative. However, should we attempt this plan, first you must be awakened, and as I’ve said, this will not go unnoticed.” She looked to Vsara with a wry smile and added, “But I believe I heard someone had an idea about handling that.”

Vsara took a deep breath and was clearly eager to finally share her idea. “So, there’s no way to mask the awakening, and our enemies will see it. And it will indicate a clear violation of the Deadpact, even if no one will fully understand how.”

She started pacing the room, her own self-satisfied smile ever present on her lips. “The army is demanding entry into the city, correct?”

“Yes.”

“I’m sure they mean in full force, but what if you let a small delegation in first, as a show of good faith?”

Samuud raised an eyebrow. “Yes, yes. That’s possible. Now stop patting yourself on the back and get to the point!”

Vsara kept pacing, unperturbed. “Our new Runesinger is, for as much as anyone can
