Sara dropped Carla off at the station ten minutes later. The drive back to her house added yet another twenty minutes to her long day. She’d called ahead, told Mark to expect her soon, in the hope he’d have the dinner ready for her when she got home. She smiled as she turned the corner and saw him standing on the doorstep, cuddling Misty.

“Hello, you two, how’s it going?”

Mark bent down to kiss her. “We’re fine. How are you? Another long day at the office.”

Sara wasn’t taken aback by his words, it wasn’t a criticism, at least that’s not how it had registered with her. “I know. The days are getting longer. I need to reassess that. It was important Carla and I stop off to question someone loosely connected with the crime. Shit! You don’t need to hear this. What’s for dinner?”

“I’m always here if you need to vent, you know that, love.”

“I know and I love you for it. Why are you avoiding the question about dinner?”

He laughed, and she fell in love all over again.

“I wasn’t aware that I had, sorry. I’ve knocked up a chicken pasta bake. I have no idea what it’s going to be like, so don’t expect much. It was one of those ‘shove it all in a dish and see how it turns out’ concoctions.”

Sara put her nose in the air. “Well, it smells delicious, and I’m starving, so bring it on.” She ruffled Misty’s head and kissed it.

They entered the house and drifted into the kitchen. Mark had already laid the table, and there were two glasses of red wine poured out.

“You read my mind. I definitely need that tonight. I don’t even have the energy to get changed.”

“Sit. You don’t have to do a thing, just eat and drink, I’ll do everything else.”

“You’re amazing. What did I do to deserve a man like you sharing my life?”

“Get away with you. Let me dish up. You’ll probably regret saying that if this goes belly up. I’m worried about the pasta drying out and becoming hard.”

“Don’t worry, I’m sure it’ll be delicious.”

And it was, in spite of Mark’s reservations.

Sara tumbled into bed at around ten-thirty, a little light-headed from the bottle of wine they’d consumed between them. She drifted off to sleep not long after.
