CHAPTER 7

SPIRITUAL WARNINGS

“Get out,” the spirit moaned. Its voice was low and haunted with grief. “Get out, get out, get out!” This spirit was not violent. His cries were not a threat, but a warning. He was warning Hashkeh about the other spirits. He wanted them to survive. Why, the Tash didn’t know, but he didn’t care either. All that mattered was that the spirit was on their side.

The dark spirit’s warning was still fresh in his mind, but he either listened to one spirit, or sacrificed the human to an army of them.

He had learned all about the malicious ones from his grandfather, who had been haunted by spirits of an ancient civil war until the day he died. They kept him awake and yelled in his ears whenever he fell asleep. The clan’s healer had to dose him with opium to get the spirits out of his mind. Apparently, once he was disconnected from the spirit realm, he was as oblivious to them as the humans were. They could scream as much as they wanted, but once he was on the opium, he was completely disconnected. Hashkeh could never understand his intense dislike of the spirits. Not until now, at least.

It was always in their traditions to help the spirits, and in return, the spirits guided them as well.

But that was not the case with Hashkeh’s grandfather.

Oh no.

He was a stubborn old man and would often interrupt lessons to tell the children about how evil the spirits were. The teachers were not very happy with that, of course, as the children refused to connect with the spirit world after that. They were mentally scarred from the picture that his grandfather painted for them.

Hashkeh never understood it.

Not until now.

Now hungry, violent eyes followed him around, watching his every move. They waited for him to show vulnerability. The vulnerability that would allow them to invade. Then they would completely wreck his mind and turn him into the same opium addict that his grandfather was. Hashkeh swallowed. He most definitely did not want to go down the same road as his grandfather did. He didn’t want to be a husk of a man that his grandchildren detested. No, he would not be his grandfather. He would rather die than be haunted by these spirits.

Of course, he would very much like to escape these ruins with both his life and his mind intact.

He had promised Hasaya, after all. He couldn’t make a single mistake. Not one. He just prayed to any spirit that would listen, to the spirit that came to him in a dream, that he would be strong enough to fight back.

Hashkeh quickened his pace, making sure that the human was close behind. He did not want the human to be left alone without him. The spirits had a sort of respect for Hashkeh. They saw the markings on his fur, the scars across his face. They knew he was a warrior and they respected him. He was one of them, after all.
