Lennon watched as Stella ran up to her on chubby legs.
"Lânin, Lânin," she said, almost as though Lennon were an old communist Russian leader, rather than a girl named after her great, great grandfather's surname, as she was.
She tugged Lennon's hand, insisting that they go upstairs to see her room. It was Jane who said, "Stella, maybe you need to leave Lennon alone for a little bit, okay? Lennon is mommy's friend."
"I'm good." Lennon offered it up with a smile, enjoying having Stella take her own hand in her small, chubby one. For whatever reason, the little girl had decided Lennon was her new best friend, even though she knew Bailey Ann much better and had just met Lennon. Lennon was apparently the cool one and had to be shown what was in her room.
The house was a beautiful, old craftsman style and Stella led Lennon up the stairs and around to the smaller room up top. All three bedrooms were nestled up here and as she walked by, Lennon saw that there was a crib in Jane's master bedroom and the two boys were playing in what was obviously their bedroom. They were neither quiet nor gentle but seemed to be getting on fine.
"Are you getting a baby sister in your room soon?" Lennon asked.
"Yes!" Stella's face lit up and that made Lennon happy. âHer crib will go over here. And I'm going to get a big-girl bed!" she pointed to the toddler bed that was pushed into one corner. âWhen baby Claire cries, it will be my job to get mommy and help take care of her. Because Iâm the big sister now.â If she was going to get a roommate, at least she was excited about it.
A-ha, Lennon thought. Good way to sell it, Jane.
Stella sat them down on a fluffy rug shaped like a flower and pulled out several tiny ponies along with a couple of dolls and an airplane.
"Here. You be airplane," she said, handing the toy to Lennon with authority. Lennon readily agreed, having no idea where the game was going. The dolls were three times the size of the airplane and the multi-colored ponies were about the size of fairies, compared to the dolls. Lennon could not figure out what situation they would all possibly get involved in.
Stella unfolded a story with the dolls flying to China, a turn that Lennon had not expected. "Why China?"
"My daddy goes to China," Stella said. Though, it wasn't said with anywhere near the enthusiasm that she had previously mentioned getting a baby sister as a roommate.
The dolls and ponies arrived in Chinaâwhere apparently the ponies must work as airport employeesâbefore Jane appeared at the top of the stairs. Apparently, she was attempting to rescue Lennon, but Lennon didnât need it.
When she protested that she was having a good time, Jane let them both know it was time for the kids to go to bed. She'd invited Bailey Ann and Lennon and Riley over for dinner and sheâd promised them a real adult meal without children.
