LUCAS

I thought I’d break the wooden table with how hard I was gripping it.

Her cries of pleasure had carried through the thin bathroom door and filled the cabin. Even long after they were gone, they were all I heard echoing in my mind and wreaking havoc on my slipping sanity.

I sucked in a deep breath, hoping the oxygen would somehow clear my head. Even though that hadn’t worked the last fifty times I’d tried it. At this rate, I was going to be perpetually hard. This wretched creature was plaguing my every thought. She was going to be my undoing—my absolute ruination. I needed her to remember what she was so I could end her life and wash my hands of her for good. Or at least for a couple of decades until she returned for another round.

Though I wasn’t sure I could handle any more. After I killed her, I knew I had to ask the Arches for reassignment.

I just needed to get myself to complete my task this one last time.

But as she stepped out of the bathroom in nothing more than a towel, her amber eyes bright as they met mine, all thoughts of running her through with my blade vanished. Instead, those thoughts were quickly replaced by the memory of her lips against mine those many years ago. The urge to slam her into the wall just to feel that body pressed against mine once more hit me hard and I held onto the dining table for dear life, rooting myself in place.

Maybe I needed to swallow my pride and allow Zain to finish her off for me as he’d offered. But the mere thought of Zain touching her, whether with his blade or otherwise, had my grip on the edge of the table tightening until it snapped off in my hand with a loud crack.

The demon—I refused to refer to her by her name—jumped back, her eyes growing wider as they fell to the piece of splintered wood in my hand. Fear bled into her normally fiery gaze. Fear caused by me. I wasn’t sure how I felt about that.

Tossing the wood aside, I reached into the bag sitting on the table and pulled out the pair of leggings and sweater I had picked up for her the day before. It was what I’d been doing while she was out in the middle of the desert trying to get herself killed.

“I got you clothes,” I said, shoving them into her arms, careful not to brush my fingers against her skin. I wasn’t sure I could handle the effect her touch had on me in that moment. Not while so much of her flesh was showing.

She stared at the clothes before her eyes flicked to her bare feet. I’d gotten her shoes as well, but there was no way I’d be giving them to her after her little escape attempt. I’d also hidden my extra pair of boots.

She wasn’t leaving this cabin again. Not alive at least.
