(4) Very high (clearance) kicks

These are used to help the attacking team move towards the try line in the hope that team-mates will sprint after the high ball and catch it or at least compete for it. In some parts of the world these kicks are known as bombs, which gives you a feeling for how high they go and how quickly they come back down towards the waiting players. These kicks are also nicknamed ‘up-and-unders’ in Rugby League football and ‘Garryowens’ in Union. Some people think they were named after Ireland’s Garryowen Rugby Union club in Limerick that had popularised the technique. Others say the kick was named after Garfield Owen, a famous Welsh full-back from the 1950s who was renowned for using the technique. Whichever way it came about, it’s a common term that’s good to understand if you hear it in a TV or radio commentary.
