Chapter 8

IT HAD BEEN TWO weeks since Peter Malcolm’s funeral. Ruby looked at the time on her phone. It was eleven-thirty in the morning on a Monday. This was early for her. On Mondays, she usually didn’t wake up before 1:00 p.m. But today was different. She had an appointment with Andrew at one-thirty.

She grudgingly got out of bed, making sure she didn’t wake Cleo. That’s another thing the couple had in common. Both of them loved to wake up late. She slipped on her fluffy Tigger slippers from Disney’s Winnie the Pooh and tiptoed into the master bathroom.

As Ruby looked at herself in the mirror and splashed some cold water on her face, she noticed she had developed dark circles under her eyes. She hadn’t been sleeping well since the funeral. The frightful memory of running into a ghost at the cemetery had not yet left her mind. She had been experiencing nightmares since that fateful day. In some of them, the ghostly older man she had met became her chair, pleading with her to find his killer. She kept asking her chair in the dream to reveal the identity of his killer. But instead of answering her, he would turn into a cute animal. The night before, he had transformed into a baby polar bear.

Her bear chair looked super cute and cuddly in her dream as he had spread his hands out, asking for a hug. But when Ruby went up to hug him, her chair’s adorable bear face had turned devilish and he had let out an evil cackle “mwahahaha” and pounced on her. He had tried to kiss her. But instead of kisses, his bear mouth just licked her all over. His breath smelled like dog poop for some reason. “Ewww!” Ruby had shrieked in her dream as she tried to push off the evil bear. She had struggled to rescue herself from his bear paws. Finally, she kung-fu kicked the bear on his big black nose, causing the creature to topple over and start crying. “Who kicks someone in the nose?” he bawled while banging his fists like an impetuous child and yelling, “Mommy!”

Ruby tried to run away but found herself strangely tied to the ground. Not by ropes but by hundreds of snakes acting like ropes. “Hiss . . .” they collectively went. Their cold, slithering skin crept across her body. The sensations were unbearable. The bear had disappeared now, and a giant black cobra had emerged in its place. “It’s the curse of the nag . . .” the former bear, now a black snake with cold, fluorescent green eyes had said in a thick Indian accent. Its fork-shaped tongue flicked back and forth as it inched closer. It was about to go for the fatal bite . . . when Ruby jerked herself awake.

Then last night, she was back at the cemetery in her dream. This time her chair had morphed into an adorable white bunny as soon as she asked him the killer’s identity.
