Chapter Fourteen

Mum wasn’t thrilled that I chose to spend my last evening in Chester at a pub, but hid her disappointment well. “Don’t worry, Ru. I’ve got Kit, a tiny glass of eggnog and finally some time to check in on the March sisters.” She shooed us off and blew me a kiss.

“We won’t be late.” I opened the passenger door and pointed at Charlie, who sat at the wheel. “The train leaves at ten in the morning, and you’ve seen how hard it is to get this one out of bed.”

“Hey!” Charlie said. “Oh, wait—you’re right.”

Mum giggled, shook against the cold air, and hurried inside.

“So, where’s this joint?” Charlie said.

“Just up the road from the shopping centre,” I said. “It would probably have been our regular pub if we went to Chester uni. Jen would love the place, as all the jocks go there.”

“And that’s why you want to go there?” Brendan said from the back seat. “By the way, you do know there’s room next to me back here?”

“And leave Charlie alone?”

“Listen,” Charlie said. “If you go back there, I’ll find the way. Just don’t make me have to break the rear-view mirror.”

I slapped her arm. “Get your mind out of the gutter, girl.”

“I love driving this car,” Charlie said as she turned left onto Saughall Road. “If only the sound system were a bit less 1982, it would be perfect.”

She turned the volume knob, and Robbie Williams sang “Let Me Entertain You” from one of Mum’s old CDs. Brendan moaned in the back seat when Charlie and I joined Robbie for the chorus.

Twenty minutes later, as Robbie declared “She’s the One”—with Charlie on ear-shattering backup vocals—I told her to stop the car. “There won’t be any space in front of the pub, so we should park here, by the laundrette.”

“William was right,” Brendan said. “You could have stepped on the gas a little. Would’ve saved my ears from all the racket.”

“Stuff it.” Charlie backed the car expertly into an available spot. “You loved it. I watched you mouth the words, so there.”

The two of them continued their banter as we strolled up Garden Lane towards the Chichester Arms, a pub I’d been to a few times before I left for uni. It was only half past seven, but the buzz from the crowd could be heard from the minute we exited the car.

A taxi swung out of Cambrian Road and stopped outside the pub. Two scantily clad girls jumped out, their skirts so short I could tell the colour of their panties. The doorman didn’t even look at their IDs; he probably knew they would be fake as a three-pound note anyway. A man in a hoodie stood on the corner, smoking and talking on his phone. When we passed him, he hurried down the alley behind the pub.

“Boxing Day crowd,” Brendan said when we went inside. “Hope we can find seats.”

We couldn’t. The pub was packed. It wouldn’t surprise me if the walls were literally bulging outwards.
