Merrick studied me, his back against one side of the shower while mine rested against the other. It was a walk-in shower so we weren't squished together, and we had left the water running to avoid anyone listening in on our conversation.

My eyes lifted to the ceiling, because I knew full and well that if I kept looking at him all naked and sexy like that, I'd start wanting him.

Other than a few hot make-out sessions, we hadn't done anything sexual in the time since we'd started fixing our house. He had yet to plan sex day, for reasons he wouldn’t tell me. And while it was nice to get to know each other without that delicious distraction, I was starting to understand why Merrick had been so against not having sex.

Partially, because I was getting really damn horny.

But mostly because without it, it felt like there was something missing in our relationship. Like we were in it together, but not all in. Something about sex had made me feel closer to Merrick. Not just physically, but emotionally too.

I was beginning to feel like keeping myself from him was just another way to put a wall between us, to prevent myself from giving him everything I had. And I didn't like that, but I also wasn't sure I was ready to abandon my fall-in-love-first plan.

But how long did it take to fall in love with someone? I needed a rulebook or something, because I'd never been in love and didn't have a clue.

"So are we going to talk about it, or just pretend it's not a big deal?" Merrick's low rumble had me tensing.

"Talk about it?" I asked, pretending I knew what we needed to talk about.

"You're still thinking I'm the last resort for taking the other half of your Alpha power." He watched me, his expression intense, but not in a way I could read. I was tempted to reach my mind out to his so I could know what he was feeling. But, like sex, that felt intimate in a way I wasn't sure I was ready for. We’d only used our mental connection to communicate when we had to at that point, not just casually.

"You're a great Alpha for the bears, but wolves require something a little different," I tried to explain my thought process. "When wolves aren't happy with the leadership, they challenge you to a fight. Often to the death. We risk our fists, faces, and lives before discussing shit. You usually just bulldoze past the other person's disagreements."

"That's because their issues usually vanish after a meal and a good night's sleep. Why should anyone risk their life over something that wouldn't matter after they took a nap?" Merrick countered.

"You're not wrong. I think you have a good point, and obviously that works for your bears, but I just don't know if it's a leadership style that would succeed with wolves. I still haven’t decided if I’m going to give the power to you or Noah, but it doesn’t really matter until he passes the trials anyway.
