Chapter Nine

“I’m guessing you didn’t reckon on me, joining in?” Brianna fought the forces of evil with brutal energy. “Come back to me, Kane. You belong here with me.”

If she’d thought the devil’s clamor had been noisy before, it was nothing compared to what hell came up with now. Repeated thunderclaps threatened to split her head in two, while lightning stabbed the ground at her feet. It took every morsel of mind strength she possessed, as well as the magic she’d gained from Kane, to remain focused enough to catch a glimpse of his soul.

Bright and unblemished as the devil pulled one way and she pulled the other, Kane was fighting the battle of his life, of his soul, of his very existence.

Lashing out, he almost took off her head. One blow from those mighty wings could crush her skull. In this dark angel form, Kane was a threat to all living beings as well as those creatures surging up from the pit.

Eyes blazing with otherworldly fire, he was lost to all reason, but Brianna remained convinced that good would always triumph over evil, and if good faltered, there was always someone else to pick up the banner and march forward, like a never-ending parade of soldiers in the light brigade. She smiled at the reference. Humor strengthened her. “I will not give up on you, Kane the Warrior,” she pledged fiercely. “I will not leave this place until you come with me.”

Closing her eyes, Brianna focused all her power on saving Kane. It seemed to take an eternity, but finally, the answer she’d hoped for came. Kane gave one final shudder and then exhaled heavily. Miraculously, and thankfully for her sanity, the wind dropped and the howling stopped.

The room seemed preternaturally quiet without hell’s orchestra creating a din.

Kane was not best pleased to be called back from whatever and wherever he’d been fighting. Totally disheveled, but apparently unharmed, he was a blissfully magnificent sight. “You shouldn’t have done that,” he said.

“Thank you is all that’s required.”

“Thank you?” he mocked. “Thank you for calling me back, when I was about to—”

“About to what?” Brianna broke in. “Lose all chance of reclaiming your soul? If you think I’m going to idly stand by while the devil calls up his demon hordes to destroy you, you’ve picked the wrong woman.”

“You shouldn’t be doing this, Brianna. It isn’t safe.”

“It isn’t safe to get out of bed in the morning. I could trip and break my neck on a rug, but I’ve no intention of remaining in bed all day.”

“I’m not interested in your bravado. I only care about you. You have a country to protect—”

“A country I was massively failing until you came along. You’re the best chance I’ve got to break free from the satanic force ruling my land and return prosperity and safety to my people. I’ve no intention of losing you, Kane.”

“This is my journey, Brianna. My redemption at stake.”

“And my country. And yes, me. I claim a life to live freely as I would wish and not at the behest of a demon.
