Ransom didn’t give a fuck if he shouldn’t. He crossed the room to Rivet and crushed her in his arms. “He doesn’t mean to hurt you.”

“Us. And so what if it comes natural or he’s doing it on purpose? The end result is the same.” She surprised him by yielding, tucking her face against his chest and holding on to him as if she needed someone to cling to in the turbulence of their life, even if she didn’t often let on to that fact.

Of course, she’d already admitted she was struggling that day. And Levi had stomped on her again when he’d freaked out too. They were a hot mess. All of them. Ransom included.

But damn if he didn’t feel ten feet tall when he stood there and rocked her gently until her ragged breathing slowed, like for once he was actually doing what he’d always tried to do most, look after those who were important to him and keep them safe. Support them so they could be happy and whole.

He rubbed her back and leaned his cheek against the top of her head. It was the best he could do to shelter her from whatever was coming for them as well as the ghosts of their past. Torn, he wished like Levi that he could whisk her away from it all, out of danger.

“Maybe he isn’t entirely wrong, though.” Ransom tentatively prodded at the crack Levi had opened in Rivet’s objections. “If you’re having doubts, or struggling with staying, there isn’t any shame in tapping out.”

“If you know how his suggestion cut me, and you see how what he’s doing is selfish, then you’re not about to pull the same shit, are you?” Rivet shoved away enough that she could level some serious side eye at him.

Given that she was so close and his legs were spread to brace them both against the onslaught of emotions running wild through them, his balls were in the danger zone. So he chose his words carefully. “No. I’m not going to try to force you to leave, but I can’t lie either. I’d be much happier if you, or Levi, or both of you were out of danger.”

“What about you?” She raised a brow at him, making him wish he could kiss her until she let him off the hook and they found much more pleasurable ways to hash things out between them.

“My life is worthless anyway, Rivet.” He dropped his arms and shrugged because it was simply the truth. “It was over the day I ended someone else’s.”

“I don’t believe that.” She shook her head. “You’re here, fighting for something, same as Levi and I are. There has to be a chance, even if it’s a tiny one, we can make up for the shit we did or we wouldn’t be bothering, would we?”

“What do you mean?” Ransom hesitated, feeling like he was being set up.

“Tell me more about what you said that night in the hotel.” Rivet bit her lip as she peeked up at him, her ire replaced with curiosity.
