Chapter 5
Over the following weeks Susan became further assimilated into life in the Carapines. She now felt very firmly one of the natives. She frequently went topless in the town and naked on the beach, yet never quite managed the complete nonchalance with which the locals viewed nudity. Her relationship with George strengthened and came to include ever more frequent spankings. Maria also took every opportunity to punish her.
If she found herself in a submissive position to the Crows and Ma Lyle, then her relationship with the other girls from Maria's bar was very different. Tilly attached herself to Susan in a role not far removed from that of servant. Despite some misgivings, Susan accepted this and found that in doing so she had also set herself above many of the others. Both Alice and Charlie came to her for discipline, which she dished out cheerfully, accepting afterwards the homage of the girls' tongues as her due.
Not only had her attitude to sex and punishment become more casual, but she also acquired a taste for the local rum and food. Within a month she had lost almost every vestige of her previous behaviour, which she came to recognise as somewhat prissy. She had thought herself liberated after her relationship with Anderson Croom, but now realised it had only made the first dent in the moral values which had been so firmly instilled in her during childhood. That very firmness had also forged her craving for corporal punishment, a realisation the irony of which was not lost on her.
Despite the outward changes, her basic personality remained the same, with her stubborn determination to get rid of the Sugar Bay cartel undiminished. In this she confided only in George, the two constables and Maria and Tilly. Yet it was in William that she found a true ally. Not that he had any particular interest in disposing of the cartel, but Susan's plans for sabotage gave a new impetus to his fascination with machinery.
Thus, when Susan had been in the Carapines for two months and O'Neil's boat, Will o'the Wisp, was sighted approaching the harbour, she was ready for a piece of sabotage that put her in minimal danger of getting caught or being subjected to the intense physical discipline she knew would be the result should Ma Lyle or Sir Geoffrey Crow find out. In the back of her mind she knew that what she wanted most deeply was to succeed in the sabotage but then get caught out. She knew the result would be a whipping in the town square, and that the experience would be both painful and shameful beyond anything she had taken before. Despite her superficial fear, deep down the prospect was tantalising and more than once she masturbated over the thought of what it would be like.
O'Neil came ashore, as arrogant as ever. Susan watched from the police station roof and was joined by Tilly St James. Tilly reported that she, Maria, Josette and Charlie had been chosen to entertain the crew, which on this occasion numbered only four.
