Memphis’s thriving music scene can be tasted during the city’s many festivals, especially Memphis in May ( memphisinmay.org), where big-name performances share space with barbecue contests, August’s Elvis Week ( elvisweek.com), and the free Memphis Music and Heritage festival, staged downtown over Labor Day weekend. While the best blues clubs are beyond downtown and usually open at weekends only, at other times even touristy Beale Street has things to offer – especially B.B. King’s, where B.B. himself appears once or twice a year. At the other end of the spectrum, the city’s vibrant alternative scene sees garage bands playing holes-in-the-wall; head midtown for the hippest underground happenings. In Overton Park, the Levitt Shell ( levittshell.org) puts on more than fifty free, family-friendly concerts a year. On a Sunday, the Rev Al Green’s gospel service is unmissable. The best source of listings is the free weekly Memphis Flyer ( memphisflyer.com).
