CHAPTER 12

Blake and I headed back to our vehicles and talked openly now that we had some privacy.

“You need to get back in touch with MCI, this is starting to get serious.” Blake twirled his car keys around his finger and chewed at his bottom lip.

“MCI? You saw how useless they are. That guy told me I was alone on this one. I don’t think they’re going to do anything.”

“We’re dealing with a seriously advanced warlock here, Zora. Who’s to say how many more he’ll kill? We’ve no way of stopping him, no way of predicting his pattern—”

“If this is your idea of a pep talk then it needs serious work,” I said, opening the van door and climbing in.

“You’re right, I’m being a little defeatist. I just don’t know what hand we play next. The killer is like three steps ahead of us.”

“If it was three steps, we’d be able to see him at least. At the moment we’re not even in the same league. He’s Marie Kondo and I’m a dime store bottle of bleach.”

Blake shot me a confused look. “You’re going to have to break that analogy down for me.”

“Never mind, I suppose we should go down to the police station and speak to the aunt.” I wasn’t looking forward to that part. Speaking to close family after a murder was always hard, raw emotions and charged feelings—it was never easy. It was then however that my phone started ringing, glancing at the screen I saw the call was coming from my apartment.

“Hello?” I asked.

“Zora, it’s me…” Mom didn’t say her name or anything—I had a feeling she was being paranoid that the lines might be tapped—but I got the message.

“Hey, is everything okay?”

“Uh… I wouldn’t say that exactly. There’s been a little mix up and something went wrong. You need to come right now.”

“I’m working a case, can it wait? Working quickly is the key to solving a mystery.”

She made an unusual squeaking sound. “I can appreciate that honey, but you need to come home. There’s been an accident.” The tone in her voice told me that this wasn’t a regular call, something was seriously wrong.

“What is it?” I said, the hairs prickling up on the back of my neck.

Mom choked and cleared her throat. “It’s Hermes, Zora. He’s… he’s dead.”

Shock hit me like a freight train, my phone slipped out of my hand and clattered across the footwell. Before I knew what was happening, I turned the keys in the ignition and put on my seatbelt.

“Zora, what’s going on?” Blake said, picking up that something was wrong.

“I have to go. We’ll pick this up tomorrow. Good night.”

With that I slammed the van door, reversed quickly out of my space and put my foot to the floor, racing home to my apartment, racing home to Hermes.
