CHAPTER FIVE

Dad came to my room as the porters carried out the last of my luggage. The guy at the back of the bunch was grimacing at the weight of the suitcase he was hauling. I’d mostly packed books. There weren’t that many pieces of clothing I absolutely had to bring with me, but stories… I had the feeling I was going to need their comfort more than ever while I waited out this banishment.

My father didn’t say anything, just caught my eye and tipped his head toward the doorway. I knew what he meant at once, with a leap of my heart. My boys were here.

I wasn’t sure if Dad had even told Celestine he was letting me have this one final moment with them. She’d frowned all through her supposed apology last night. I doubted she’d have approved.

We descended the stairs in careful silence. My fingers curled toward the sleeves of my blouse, where I’d hidden a token I suspected even Dad wouldn’t have approved of. The soft paper tickled the undersides of my arms.

Dad led me around the back of the garage, where the broad, green-slatted building met the deeper green of the hedges. The smell of car exhaust already tainted the leafy perfumes of the garden. A few of our drivers had gone ahead with some of our possessions. Our “family” was taking the drive together, with my father at the wheel of his favorite: the old maroon Bentley.

The boys were waiting in the corner between a hedge and the garage. Damon had his shoulders slouched inside his leather jacket, his eyes shadowed. The twins stood side by side, Seth still and solemn and Kyler shuffling his feet. Jin was tracing a looping design through the grit on the garage wall. And Gabriel stood in front of all of them, his chin high and his legs braced as if prepared for some kind of fight.

Their gazes all jerked to me when Dad and I came around the building. Relief in varying tones flashed across all their faces. The feeling hit me too, sweet but sharp with the knowledge that this meeting was going to be over far too quickly.

Dad hung back near the side of the garage as I went to meet the boys. He was giving us some space, but staying within sight. What did he think he needed to watch out for?

“Hey, Sprout,” Gabriel said, smiling. The lilt of the nickname made my throat close up.

“What’s going on?” Damon demanded. “What’s with the secret get-together?”

“It’s not exactly secret,” Jin pointed out, his gaze darting to my dad. My throat tightened more when I took in the design he’d drawn. He’d copied the symbol that’d been carved into the stone tower almost exactly. Dad definitely wouldn’t like that.

I stepped close enough to put my hand over it, to smudge the lines as if by accident. Jin looked at me and gave me a crooked grin, as if he guessed what I was doing.

“Are you all okay?” I asked.
