Chapter 12

The depth of my distraction becomes obvious when I turn into the alleyway and have to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting the 1968 copper-brown Chevy Nova SS parked beside the bookshop’s alley entrance.

Erick grins through his windshield and backs all the way down the alley, giving me room to pull into the middle garage, where I park the Jeep.

My eager fiancé meets me outside and offers to carry my wrestling boots.

“Are you turning into some kind of women’s wrestling ring rat?”

His eyes widen. “Ring rat?”

“Yeah, that’s what they call the stalker-y superfans.”

He grins and flashes his eyebrows. “I was hoping I already had superfan status. I was bucking for behind-the-scenes access — no stalking necessary.”

Rolling my eyes, I open the alleyway door, and we walk smack dab into my grandmother’s ghost.

Spasms of shivers ripple over my boyfriend and he inhales sharply.

I take a different approach. “Grams! There’s no need for you to camp out by the door. You’re the first person, I mean, ghost, I look for every time I get home.”

“Sorry, sweetie. I was all fired up to hear about your match.”

“I’ll give you all the details after I get changed.” As I climb over the “No Admittance” chain at the bottom of the circular staircase, Erick Harper seems to have other ideas.

“Isadora, I feel like you’re here. And if you want to hear about Cherry Darling’s match, I’m your man.” He looks on uneasily as his right arm seems to lift and fall of its own accord and another shiver grips him.

I shout from the top of the staircase, “That’s her version of, ‘Yes, please.’”

Grams giggles. “Oh, Mitzy. You’re such a hoot.”

As Erick begins to spin the yarn, I disappear into the apartment to wiggle out of my teeny tiny shorts.

By the time I’m in comfortable yoga pants and a thick sweater, Erick is nearing the end of his tale.

“And then she hooked her legs around the wild girl’s head and completely flipped her over 180 degrees!” He’s gesturing wildly with his arms, and Grams is enthralled.

“Then she spun around and put her in the sleeper hold! The crowd went nuts.”

Isadora zooms toward me. “Sweetie! I got so excited about the wrestling, I nearly forgot about the investigation.”

Placing a hand on Erick’s arm, I attempt to bring his show to an end. “That’ll do, Sheriff. That’ll do. What we really need to be talking about is this ‘going nowhere’ case. Although, I might just have a juicy update.”

“Seriously?” Erick looks hopeful for the first time in days.

“Yeah, come on up to the apartment. I’ll order some pizza for delivery.”

Upstairs, Pyewacket joins our impromptu celebration. He chooses Erick’s side of the room and offers his broad tan head for proper scratching.

Sheriff Harper gives the caracal his undivided attention. “Hey, buddy, did you miss me?”

“Reow.” Can confirm.

“Watch yourself, Pye. I’m still the keeper of the Fruity Puffs.”

Pyewacket gazes in my direction and immediately squeezes his eyelids closed.

Even this four-legged fiend knows the emptiness of my threats.

“What’s this new info, Moon?” Erick continues to lavish attention on Pyewacket.
