Chapter Five: Kieran

I was so happy that Neve’s date with Hunter had turned out well. I liked him and I knew that Neve really liked him. I didn’t want to see her get hurt, but I knew it was her call as to whether or not her relationship with Hunter would proceed. A lot of her decision depended on our dinner with him and Giles.

I’d been cooking in the kitchen for hours.

“Are you sure you don’t want help with something?” Neve asked, coming into the kitchen for the third time. This time, she was dressed, make-up on, and looking extremely beautiful.

“There is one thing...” I said, putting down the ladle in my hand and slipping out of the moderately stained apron I wore. I walked to the other side of the island and pulled her close.

She laughed. “Oh? And what’s that?”

I kissed her. “That’s all. You can go back to your wine now.”

She sat on the other side of the counter. “How about if I just sit here and keep you company?. They won’t be here for another half an hour and the dining room is all set up. There’s a fire going in the living room for later.”

“You look excited,” I observed, turning to put the hors d'oeuvres in the oven.

“I am. I’m excited for me. But I’m kind of nervous about meeting Giles. What if he doesn’t like us and decides that he doesn’t want Hunter to get involved with me? Or us? Or anyone? I mean, this is something new to them,” Neve said.

Stirring the sauce, I said, “I know. It’s a risk. But Hunter did tell you that he and Giles did a lot of talking. I’m sure in the past forty-eight hours they’ve talked even more. Giles must be fairly open-minded about the whole situation, otherwise, they would have called and said they weren’t coming, right?”

“I guess so,” she said.

“Don’t get too far ahead of yourself, Neve. That’s what tonight is for. To meet them, give them time to ask questions. I’m sure once Giles learns that you won’t get in the way of his relationship with Hunter, he’ll be okay with everything.”

“I hope so. I’m trying not to get too invested. But I like Hunter. He’s the first man I’ve met in a long time that I felt any kind of connection with, you know?” she asked.

“Yes, I get it. It’s not easy. It would be nice if we would have met someone that was already poly but you know as well as I do that just because someone says they're poly, it doesn’t mean they might not turn out to be unsuitable or even toxic. It happens whether your monogamous or polyamorous.”

She nodded. “Okay. Just breathe. If it is meant to be, it will be. We’ll just be ourselves.”

“That’s right.”

Just then the doorbell rang and Neve jumped. “Do you want to get that and take them to the living room for now? I just need to turn things down and I’ll be right there.
