Fifteen
Dry Creek Police Department, Investigations Building. Dry Creek, Arizona.
Detective Michele Lindsey had remained in the concealed monitor room, and spent time watching both the Landon-Buddy interview and the James-Robert interview, but the room’s interior audio speakers only broadcast sound from James-Robert. No sense listening to Stevenson lie and act stupid, all of our substance will come from the other rooms today.
Despite a lot of small talk dialogue, Michele didn’t think Officer Scott James had made much progress with Robert. Sure, he’s talking, but it’s all about dude-stuff, and nothing related to what we’re doing here. She felt Robert’s defensive, emotional walls probably kept most people out, and he may be afraid of actual consequences if Stevenson thinks his grandson betrayed him. James had even told him, several times in several ways, that his grandfather knew cops had brought him to their building and were talking to him. Well, she thought, an almost-truth. We can talk to a fifteen-year-old without a guardian’s permission, and he still might be a suspect, so, a little white lie that hurts no one.
Michele heard the door’s maglock release, and Wall almost immediately burst into the room. “Lindsey, on me. Melner, stay here for the time being, but we’re gonna start typing pretty fuckin’ quick.” He briefly made eye contact with Michele as she approached him. “Let’s go,” he commanded and led her toward the door.
Having never seen Wall like this, Michele felt confident whatever Jezz had said was not only significant, but probably pretty heinous. “Mike, is it Stevenson?”
“Not yet,” he barked as they entered the kitchen. “Well, yes, we have P-C to arrest him, but I don’t wanna hook him yet,” as he quickly strode out into the central corridor toward the interview hallway. “Robert’s in my crosshairs right now. We’re gonna pull him backwards through a goddamned knothole, and he’s gonna tell us everything he knows. Right, the fuck, now,” he concluded just as he reached, and forcefully opened, the door into Room #2. Right on Wall’s heels, Michele saw they’d surprised both James and Robert, but Robert’s face had also been painted with substantial fear.
“Enough bullshit, Junior,” Wall loudly announced. “How long have you been molesting Jezz?!”
“Wha-wha-who-who’s Jezz?!” His panicked response betrayed all his emotions. “I don’t know any ‘Jezz!’”
“Bull-shit! Your cousin! The eight-year-old, the little girl who was only six or seven when you made her start rubbing your ‘big cock’ until it threw up on her. That one! Memory coming back to you know now, fuck-o?! Or, are there other little elementary school girls stroking your dick?!”
“Um, that’s, that’s ‘Jessica,’ and I don’t know wha-, what she told you,” he stammered while glancing all around the room and toward its lone doorway behind Wall. Lame, Michele thought. He’s showing nervousness, deceit, fear, and actively looking for an escape route.
“Yes, you do,” Wall continued pressing him, “because I just told you what she said. How do you explain that, Rah-bert?”
“I, I mean, what, I don’t…” The boy’s eyes welled over with tears that he didn’t bother to try and wipe away, his lower lip tremored, and he started to shake.
