Chapter fourteen

When Ellery got home, she dragged her butt into the house, fed Quinn, and stepped into a shower. A new place had new sounds, so when she came out of her room in sweatpants and a hoodie, she paused to listen. It was warm enough to open a couple of windows for Quinn during the day, so as she stood in the main living space, she could hear voices from Myke’s place, but not exactly what was being said.

The day after she’d moved in, Grant had brought by a window attachment that allowed Quinn to crawl out and get some sun and fresh air – but kept him safe from predators – and the birds safe from him. Her little house panther finished his food and jumped back up into the window box perch, clearly happy with the new addition.

She scanned her choice for dinner and stuck it into the cooker before she poured a glass of wine and took a sip. Aware that work had been done during the day, she decided to step outside and see what they’d accomplished. The side door opened into a beautiful ten-by-ten-foot screen porch, a door on one side of the screened area led to a walkway that curved around to the back of the building, and on the other side, a stair-ladder led up to what looked like a sliding hatch.

A voice behind her made her jump. “There’s a control pad on the side of the ladder to open or seal the hatch so if it rains, it won’t leak.”

Elle turned to look at Grant on the other side of the screen door and pressed a hand to her chest. “You startled me. How do you know about this?”

“It’s a gift from me to you,” Grant replied. “May I come in?”

“Uh, sure. Gift?” Elle asked, confused.

Grant stepped inside and made sure the door closed behind him, then turned to look at her. “I picked up a few things to help my friends feel more at home in their new places. I wanted to do something nice for you, and I remembered about the fire escape being a favorite place, so I asked them to add this for you.” He reached out and tapped the button on the ladder, and the hatch slid open. “Care to go up and look?”

Elle handed him her glass of wine and made her way up the ladder. She stopped at the top and sucked in a breath, then ordered herself not to cry. “How…?”

Grant started up behind her, so she went up the rest of the way and settled on her cushion, then took the glass of wine from Grant so he could sit on the edge of the opening, his feet on the ladder.

“Myke had packed the stuff from the balcony, so she knew what went out there. I had her dig it out and we put it up here when they were done,” Grant said. A five-foot square area was framed in with glass
