BREATH OF LUCK

Tara Nina

Excelsior Hotel, Las Vegas, 1963

“Did you see?” Lolita twirled, giddily. Her signature full-length, silver gown fanned out at the bottom, dancing around her matching high heels. She practically squealed, breathlessly, “Sinatra was in the audience.”

Luigi “Lucky” DiBonadetta closed the door behind him and simply stood quietly, staring at the most beautiful woman he’d ever known. The more she spun, the more her brilliant red curls bounced. He’d fallen in love the first moment he’d seen her, the day she’d auditioned for the lounge. Her voice was pure heaven laced with sexy seductress. Her beauty was only outmatched by her kind, loving nature. Being with her made him a better man and he didn’t plan to lose her. He crossed the living area of the Sunrise Suite and captured Lolita in a warm hug. “This is only the beginning, my love. Word is Sinatra’s creating a new show and was scouting local talent to open for him.”

“You think he liked me?” She draped her arms around his neck as she smiled at him. When he hesitated to answer, she nibbled her lower lip—a nervous habit of hers that he found to be adorable.

“I know he loved you.” He tapped her nose with his fingertip, lightly, then rested his hands at her waist. Intentionally, he let his gaze drift down the length of her body, then returned to her smoky gray eyes. “He’d have to be deaf not to. The Piano Lounge is packed every night you sing. Those people come to see you. He’s a businessman, not a fool. He knows a good thing when he sees one.”

“Oh, Lucky, I hope you’re right.” Her gray eyes seemed to shine, showing her excitement. He loved that about her. She couldn’t hide her emotions from him. Lolita was full of joy and happiness, something he’d never known until she’d entered his world. If anyone deserved a break like this one, it was Lolita. In a business of clawing their way to the top, she wasn’t that sort of bitch. She was a package of talent and class all rolled into a beautiful soul. Lucky’s desire grew as she rubbed against him, making them both fully aware of their need for one another.

“I know I am.” He felt her shiver in his arms as he leaned in and stole a long luxurious kiss, enjoying her taste before stepping out of their embrace. He crossed to the ornate French doors leading to the balcony and swung them open. “Let’s have dinner overlooking our city of opportunity. Tonight is only the beginning.”

A knock sounded on the door followed by a muffled announcement, “Room service.”

He caught her elbow before she moved toward it. “I’ll get that, babe. I ordered dinner and champagne to celebrate. Why don’t you get comfortable?”

She kissed his cheek and scooted into the bedroom to change. Lucky opened the door then turned, motioning toward the French doors. “Please push the cart over to the balcony. My lady and I wish to dine under the stars.
