The drive to the Crispy Biscuit took just a few minutes in Kate’s car.

Emma greeted us at the door. “Hey, Isabella. Two for breakfast?”

“Emma, do you remember Officer Stanton?”

Emma looked at Kate. “Of course, we talked a few days ago.”

Kate nodded. “Isabella wants to sit at the same booth and see if she can remember anything else from that morning. Is that possible?”

Emma looked to the dining room. “You’re in luck, that booth is empty.” She picked up two menus and led us into the dining room.

Once we sat and Emma took our drink orders—coffee for Kate and orange juice for me—Kate asked, “Can you join us for a few minutes? I’d like to hear your recollection of the day as well.”

Emma surveyed the dining room. “Give me a few minutes to get your drinks and tell Liz I’m taking a break.”

I looked out at the room, trying to remember what I’d seen that morning with Mina. “Okay, here’s what happened. I walked in and saw Mina sitting here, where you are. She was facing Palmer. We talked and laughed. At one point Juliana walked past the table with her sons, who were running in the aisle.”

I closed my eyes to think more. “That was before Dan died.”

I saw Emma almost fall over, and without really thinking, I used a tiny bit of magic to help her stay upright. She didn’t need to spill an entire tray of drinks over herself on such a busy morning. “Just before Dan started to have problems, I remember Emma almost fell. It was the most spectacular save I’d ever seen. I was sure she was going to drop her entire tray.”

I opened my eyes and saw Kate pursing her lips. “Did anyone run into her or get in her way?” she asked.

“No. There was no one near her.” That didn’t seem right. Emma had been working at the Biscuit since she was old enough to have a job. She could easily handle a tray of drinks, even if there were people in her way. Had something happened I didn’t see?

“And then what happened?”

“Then I heard banging on a table behind me. I turned to look and saw Palmer sitting with his cousin, though I didn’t know who it was then.”

“Okay, hold that image. Was there anyone near them?”

The Biscuit had been packed that morning. I hadn’t noticed anyone who seemed out of place, though. “All the tables in that section were full. By the time I turned around to see what the noise was, everyone else was staring at Dan. Once he got out of the booth, he was looking pretty bad, and people moved further away from him. Only Palmer got up and tried to help.”

“Did you see anyone leaving?”

“By the time it was clear Dan was in trouble, lots of people were leaving. Maybe Emma can help with the names of customers, but I was too focused on Palmer and Dan at that point.”

I looked behind me at the table Dan had died next to.
