Three hours later, me and three of my finest soldiers and the scout who had just returned sat snugly in an Eagle, flying back toward Earth. I had left my number two in command on Mars. During my absence, I could still watch the progress and give orders if necessary. I needed to find out if the portal had been found and destroyed. And if it had, which one! Had I lost any chance of getting back to my world? The Roma Empire had been fun, but I wanted to press on or go home. I sat back in the custom fitted seat as the ship roared toward my home planet.

After six hours of non-stop flight, it felt good to enter Earth’s atmosphere. Our approach vector would take us to the American islands. Centuries of isolation had allowed them to begin to return to normal. I locked on to the signal for the site of the explosion as we continued to fly high over the planet. When we got closer, I saw a destroyed gate in a huge stone wall. This was it? I came all the way from Mars for this? I turned to the scout.

“This is a gate, not a portal.”

“Aren’t they the same thing?” he asked.

“Ugh,” I groaned, shaking my head.

I adjusted our course to head back above the atmosphere and into space for the return trip to Mars. On the way, a strange energy signature appeared to the north in what was once called Kanada - or something, eh? I had read about it in the history books but had not paid too much attention. The strange red blip on my map looked interesting enough to investigate.

“We’re gonna check this out,” I said.

The men did not complain or even grumble. As I said, my finest troops. Well, except for the scout. He shot off his fat mouth.

“I don’t think we should check it out,” he said.

“Why? Because you should have before you came back to Mars?”

He looked away, not saying anything. I returned my focus to the front viewscreen and the miraculous view outside. Then the portal came into view. I almost jumped out of my seat in excitement, but I controlled myself. A thousand years of life, and I still had to struggle to keep my emotions in check. That’s what made me human.

“We’re landing. Everyone be ready.”

As the Eagle dove lower, I saw something I never expected, another guardian mech. This one had more rust and moved slower, but the model was the same from what I could tell. Landing and talking to it would have been the best option, but it fired two missiles at us as we got closer. I took evasive measures then lit into it with our two main railguns. The energy expenditure would be off the charts, but I wanted to take it out quickly.
