Chapter Sixteen

The next morning, I awoke facing the possibility that my plans for the last few days of my Nova Scotian interlude might need to be altered. It appeared that probably I had been chasing a chimera, something that had all the trappings of a genuine solution to my Parmenidean puzzle, but which now appeared to be taking me down the wrong path.

Okay, that might be a bit melodramatic. I hadn’t found proof that what I was looking for, what I had thought Samuel Barrington 1979 was a clue to, was wrong. The document provided by Ms. Armstrong at the Maritime Museum indicated that there was another, and much more likely, possibility. I was convinced that the answer still was connected somehow to the Seven Years War. It was just that a link to Louisbourg now appeared much less likely. I ran my hand through my hair, feeling at once both frustrated and intrigued, while I considered how to spend my remaining several days in Nova Scotia. What I needed was a firm footing. What I was getting was a series of conditional pointers: maybe it’s this; maybe it’s that; maybe it’s something else.

Okay, Rolls. What’s the status now? What are the next moves?

Status.

I had finished at Louisbourg, and the information I had got there was certainly interesting and might yet prove useful. But nothing indicated that I should spend any more time there. The basic hard reality was that all my searching had led to nothing that allowed me to confirm that Samuel Barrington 1979 pointed to anything in Louisbourg 1760. And I could see nowhere else to look that might provide any further new information pointing toward such a connection.

Instead, the best piece of evidence now seemed to indicate that 1760 was indeed a date of interest, but that it was tied to a different geographic location. That was what was emerging from the Maritime Museum documents. And when I stood back from it all, it was clear enough that the decisive event at Louisbourg occurred not in 1760, but in 1758. It was in 1758 that the Louisbourg fortress fell and passed from French to English hands. By comparison, the destruction of the fortifications in 1760 was a mop-up operation at best.

So what was the something else?

There were two somethings else that took place in 1760, but for me these now seemed only of general historical interest. One was the event that finally marked a fundamental change to the future of the northeastern part of North America: the capitulation of Montreal, when Governor General Vaudreuil-Cavagnial and General Lévis surrendered all of New France to the English armies led by Murray, Havilland, and Amherst. Could this have anything to do with the Barrington nexus? Hard to say for certain, but it was looking doubtful.

The other something else, at least the something else that was making more sense to me, was the Battle of the Restigouche. It had been the last naval engagement of the Seven Years War. But
