CHAPTER NINETEEN

“I thought that shift was never gonna end,” Kate remarked as she fumbled with her keys in the door.

All her friends were in the hallway behind her. Dave and Rachel had been crewing another ambulance and ran into the same sort of weird stuff Kate’s team had. They were all wiped, but they’d agreed to meet at her place for pizza and to discuss what to do next.

Kate opened the door and let them all inside. Leo ordered pizza while Kate called dibs on the shower first. There was a brief argument over the shower queue since everyone wanted to get the grime of the day off. An hour later, they were all relatively clean, fed, and sipping beers in her living room as they went over their day.

“This is going to get worse from here, isn’t it?” Dave asked.

He looked scared, and Kate couldn’t blame him. At least she had the tools to do something about these magical events when they happened.

Rachel pulled her hair back in a ponytail and looked around the room with tired eyes. “We can’t keep flying blind like this. We need more information. Old myths, legends, anything that might give us a clue. I volunteer at the Somerville Library on the weekends, and I overheard Boston is digitizing most of their older and more valuable books for online searches. Maybe we can find something that way?”

“It’s worth a shot.” Kate pulled out her laptop while the others grabbed their tablets or phones.

“Google Books might be worth checking, too,” Mike added. “They digitized a lot of old library books from around the world. If there’s any historical record of Surges or anything like them, it might be in there.”

They all got to work, doing what they could to research the current crisis. Kate dug into old books she’d never heard of before, one search string leading to another. Pages flickered past, tales of witch trials, folklore, or spirits and hauntings, but nothing really matched what they were seeing with the Surges.

“Surges are magic returning to the world,” Rory began. “That last happened, oh, something like ten thousand years ago. If you find records, they will likely be in tales passed down, not in writing.”

“Ugh. Rory is reminding me that the last Surges before this wave were about ten thousand years ago, guys. Not sure we’re going to find anything this way,” Kate announced.

“Ah, might have something!” Leo held out his tablet for Kate to see. It was an old maritime logbook entry describing strange lights over Salem Harbor. A faded illustration next to the entry depicted what looked like a tear in the night sky.

She zoomed in on the text, translating as best she could from the old English script. It spoke of sailors witnessing “a crackle of ye heavens” and “lights most unnatural” but offered no more explanation of the events.

“Could have been a funky Northern Lights,” Kate mused. “But it also might mean something. Good find, Leo.”

“I don’t know. It feels to
