TWENTY-FOUR

Scott was in the front passenger seat, her hands in cuffs. Medina keeping her eyes on the road, navigating the traffic of downtown Long Beach. Neither of them talking about the bag of money on the backseat.

“Nice bar over there,” Scott said, pointing. “We could go in, get a couple drinks, catch up.” Just talking, like they were old friends, running into each other after years apart.

Medina didn’t answer. Her head was full enough of thoughts already. She needed to count the money, try and figure out what was going on. Also, she needed to ask about Big Wheel, get the name. And then what? As soon as Big Wheel found out she was in the game, she became a target.

Chances were, she already was a target. Why would Big Wheel wait for confirmation?

But first, before she did anything, she needed to figure out what she was doing right now. This was the most vulnerable time, in any trace job. She had a fugitive fresh in custody, other people were looking for them, and she’d only slept a total of six hours across the past two days. She could hear Reed Palmer’s voice in her head, saying, this is when you start making mistakes.

“How’s your brother?”

That pulled Medina out of her head. “What?”

“Sammy, how’s he doing?”

“Yeah.” She paused a beat. Looking at Scott, then back to the road. “He’s fine.”

Scott casual, again, still talking like this was a friendly meet up, totally ignoring that she was sitting in handcuffs. The cool girl. “He figured himself out okay?”

“You mean, is he still gay?”

“Well, I mean, has he come out?”

What the hell. Why not.

Medina decided to go with it, a good distraction from all the other thoughts. “He lives in Seattle, sends me postcards. Came out to my folks after he left.”

“Postcards?”

“Started as a joke. He said he was going to see the whole world, but settled down in the first place he visited, found a guy he liked and stayed there. So now he sends me a postcard from there, every month, as if he was still travelling.”

“That’s sweet. And your other brother, I forget his name.”

“Gabe.”

“Gabe. Yeah. Big guy, scared the shit out of me. What’s he doing?”

Medina closed her eyes for a second, and could feel the lids didn’t want to go back up. She weighed the options. If she was taking Scott to Reed and the DA, that would be a six hour drive. If she was taking her on to Eddie, that could be ten. Or, say, split the difference, deliver Scott to Reed, then take the money to Eddie. But he’d hired her to go after two million, not two hundred grand. There were still too many questions.

The car swerved. Scott yelped. Medina opened her eyes, pulled hard on the wheel to correct. Damn, that had been close. Okay, new plan. Find a motel here, somewhere secure, where she could bed down for four or five hours, get all she needed, then figure out the rest from there.
