Thirty

Four in the morning is a hell of a time to start a battle.

Rogue and the three carriers formed a line abreast, with Rogue being third from the left. We jumped out to meet the fleet coming towards the planet, but well in advance of them. For the first time, the carriers didn’t launch their fighters. This was going to be a capital ship fight. All the same, the pilots were in their fighters.

Jane had tried to take AK’s seat, and been politely and firmly pointed to the admiral’s chair behind mine. The look on her face clearly said she’d never even considered sitting there. My guess was she considered it her brother’s seat, and was totally used to being the ship AI instead of the admiral in charge. Although how you became a two star admiral without being accustomed to fleet command was mystifying. Then again, so much about the Imperium was a mystery.

On AK’s side of the main console, the head and shoulders of the other three captains were showing in holographic form, along with Lancelot’s as CAG. And I now knew mine and Jane’s were showing on all of theirs. It made me feel self-conscious, hyper aware of needing to scratch my nose. I did anyway, and then felt embarrassed about it. This ship command inside a fleet thing was just too different from what I was used to.

A channel opened, and we saw the bridge of one of the dino fleets. It looked much the same as the previous one, but not identical.

“Rawtenuga commander,” said Jane. “I am Rear Admiral Jane of the Hunter Imperium. This system is under the protection of the Imperium, and you are commanded to leave the system immediately. Your failure to return to the jump point will be interpreted as an act of war. You have five minutes to comply.”

The whole thing of an alien race knowing what five minutes was, boggled my mind. But even back home we had translators for all known languages, and some of them used different words and systems of measurement. We were different ourselves of course. Most used kilometers, we still used miles. That sort of thing. But this was an alien.

We were given the dinosaur version of a very large grin, with very large teeth, and the channel dropped. Missiles began to launch from the whole fleet. We had our answer.

The four ships jumped, removing two thirds of the distance, and putting us directly in the path of the missiles aimed at us. Thousands of anti-missile missiles launched at them, and we jumped again. The popup told me to call them mosquitoes. If we were in a swamp on a planet, this number of mosquitoes would make any action seriously uncomfortable, without the swamp complicating things.

We appeared more spread out, behind four of the rear ships in the dino formation, and four fingers pulled main triggers, blowing the target ships apart. We also significantly damaged the ship in front of ours. At the same
