Twenty Five

We jumped into the Hyena system four days later.

There had been no further incidents, and the recon patrols had found nothing worth investigating further. Zee had put magicsats in most of them on the recommendation of the flight leader, without going there though, so she was making progress.

We missed a fight with pirates in another system on the other side of Kelewan, where a trio of cruisers had jumped in to protect a lone freighter from a single pirate ship. They destroyed it after it refused to surrender. The freighter had been one of ours.

Much to my surprise, we weren’t stopped by the Hyenas after jumping in. The CAP went first, went unchallenged by the small fleet of cruisers waiting there, and formed up with Jury after we appeared behind them. There was enough freighter activity here that the way to the planet was very well defined. So we turned to follow the previous ship in that was still in sensor range, with the convoy jumping through after us, and reforming behind us.

The system had four jump points, all with the same cruiser squadron. A fifth larger squadron was in orbit of the planet, which was the hub of the four way traffic flow. There was also a lot of in-system traffic, with what looked like asteroid field mining going on in a major way. In orbit was a shipyard of reasonable size, although the bays were only cruiser sized or smaller. And quite a lot of industrial stations. This was obviously an advanced world.

I was interested to see there were a lot of the armed freighter class of ships the pirates had used. So much so you had to wonder if the whole culture was pirate based, or if they were so paranoid about being attacked, they routinely over-gunned their freighters.

Sticking out like cat’s balls, though, was a Keerah fleet, also in orbit. While not the current classes, they were still formidable ships, and included two battleships. There were also what looked like military transports orbiting near them. Looking at the fleet made me wonder if I was a fly being allowed to approach a spider.

However, the flight inward was also uneventful. I decided in a system with so much military presence that the CAP wasn’t necessary, and might be seen as a provocation, so I had them land. They were then added into the recon schedule, which was still in progress.

Docking was the same as at the Alsatian station, so not a problem. Offloading began immediately, with representatives for some of the receivers waiting for us on the dock, and wanting some of the higher priority shipments in a hurry. Some enquiries revealed the fact that Imperium goods were already replacing local ones in cargo holds, and some of the local shipments were waiting a lot longer than normal to find a ride here as a result. Our happiness in being able to help was made known. And the fact we had no Imperium goods on board was noted.
