PUSH EMOTIONS AWAY and decide to save their lives. It was my mantra and all I could do.

“Rebecca, take all the gun and bow people with their rifles or bows to the area designated as Black.” I looked at my notes. “A cabin on Black Mountain.” My voice still cracked as I shoved my feelings down to where they belonged. I needed the people who could be anchors for portals to be split while it was night.

“Got it,” she stood.

“Hold on,” said Wesley in his trance. “Everyone dies again.”

That settled it in my mind. The spy had direct access. I wish Johann had left the discussion in German instead of proving a point. “Did you check because of the spy discussion?”

Wesley nodded. He was smart and heard the spy comment earlier.

“Rebecca, Leah is on your team. Rachel, Jenna is on your team,” I said.

“Rachel and Miles, take everyone left and teach them basic spear use. The principal items are the squad formation and receive a charge.”

“Yeppers!” said Rachel.

These kids had the same enthusiasm as my friends did when I said they could be heroes. I got a hold of myself. Not following through was worse than any decision. Lives were at stake and I needed to be Hauptmann Reiser, not Corey the Druid.

My emotions were gone, replaced by military leadership. It’d be skills that kept them alive.

Others made travel plans. “Corey, we have resources to draw upon.” Nathan and Nicole walked to me as I drew my main circle for the battle.

“Like what?” I asked. “Follow me as I make circles.”

“Kevlar vests, night vision devices, communication equipment, tactical gear, thermal imaging systems, and others,” said Nicole.

“She is our weapons expert and has the inventory of all military equipment,” he said.

Spymaster and Quartermaster. We were short of people in leadership positions. I made eight circles. The enemy spy saw these, so I’d have to make more during the battle.

“Nathan, can you take anyone left you trust and setup a command center here? Nicole, can you show me our supplies and walk me through them?”

Nathan saluted and jogged into the store.

She winked at me. “Aren’t you scared to be alone in the car with me?”

“I am a Hauptmann, preparing his troops for battle. Nothing will stop me from making them the best they can be.” But she was right. This was the wrong time for this. We should wait for a few days. But if she was in charge of weapons, then I was out of choices. I dreaded being in the car alone with her.

There were three items I needed to judge if I would accomplish Preacher Jon’s assignment:

● We had to win the battle with me alive.

● They needed to want to be a well-trained military.

● However, If I stayed, I had to marry this girl. It would be unfair of me to decide without giving effort.
