Chapter

Twelve

The delivery guy and his partner, Tom, unloaded the case off the truck … and then we ran into a problem. It wouldn’t fit through the front door. It was two inches too wide. The only way to get it into the shop was to take the door off the hinges.

Thankfully, Lou and Tom were extremely kind and offered to do it. They were regulars, so they had no kind of paranormal allegiance, but they drove three hours to deliver the case, and they didn’t have any other deliveries.

Once the case got into the shop, they had to take out the old one that I was replacing. It wasn’t as large as the new case, but it was still big, and took them a while getting it back onto the truck. Plus, they put the door back together, for which I was thankful. I wish I could’ve quickly baked them something for them to take along, but all I could do was buy them each a handful of baked items and some coffee from Bonnie’s.

By the time it was all finished, the sun had set over Greylock Cove. Bonnie asked Alicia to close up the coffee shop, and we headed over to Julie’s apothecary shop. As we were driving over, I grew a little apprehensive about stopping at Julie’s.

I hadn’t been there since the fallout from Grace’s murder. Gloria, Grace’s former best friend, had helped Julie by storing the Fressia plant in her cellar. She then used it to set off a domino effect that covered up the murder of her best friend. After it was all over, Julie was questioned about why she sold Fressia plant and a few other items.

In the end, she escaped with a fine from the Magical Ordinance Council for not having regulations locked down on selling certain items. A lot of dangerous ingredients that caused harm could have proper benefits if used in the right way and not abused, so she wasn’t technically breaking the law by having certain items. Still, as we parked out front, I wasn’t sure how she was going to react when she saw me.

“Hey, Bonnie,” Julie called out joyfully as Bonnie entered the shop first. “How’s it go—” Julie’s face immediately dropped when she saw me walk in. “Rosie.”

I offered her a small wave. No matter what happened, I didn’t blame Julie for owning the Fressia that Gloria used. Her jovial demeanor from just a second prior disappeared. Her head dipped a little, but her glum expression couldn’t be hid by her short pixie haircut of her black hair.

Bonnie didn’t let the awkwardness that floated in the air deter her. She stepped closer to the counter that Julie stood behind, walking with conviction. “Julie, we needed to get some willow bark and mudroot.”

For a moment, Julie stood silent. Her light brown eyes bounced around her shop. From the small shelves lined with different liquids, to the row of plants organized against the far wall, and finally down to the counter and the cash register in front of her.
