7. — SUICIDE LEGION

JIMMY CHRISTOPHER, when he left the room, did not at once depart from the offices of Intelligence headquarters. He stopped at one of the phone booths provided for the use of agents and phoned Mitchell Field, to ask whether Captain Loring was still there.

In a moment he was talking to the flight commander, who had just returned alone from the reconnoitering expedition into New England. He knew Captain Loring, and was known to the aviator. Jimmy had made use of the captain's services in the past.

"This is Operator 5," he said. "Is your plane in condition to take off at once for another flight into New England, Captain?"

"I've just finished checking it over," Loring told him. "Aside from a few bullet holes in the wings, it's in tiptop shape. What's in the wind?"

"I'm coming out there," Jimmy replied. "I'll want you to take me into New England, as near to Wetherill as possible, and land me there. It'll be dangerous—"

"You know I don't mind the danger," Loring broke in. "But," he added doubtfully, "General Falk told me on the phone to await his instructions. Are you acting under the general's orders?"

"All right, then," Loring said. "I just didn't want to disobey the general. But as long as you talked to him—"

"I'm starting at once," Jimmy interrupted hurriedly. "See you soon, old man."

He left the booth, his keen blue eyes reflecting the spirit of the daring plan he had conceived on the spur of the moment. But he had not taken three steps before the clerk on duty at the switchboard in the outer office called to him:

"Operator 5! Call for you. It's the police department!"

Jimmy frowned, said, "I'll take it in the booth." He hurried back, lifted the receiver, and suddenly felt warm blood racing through his veins as a voice came to him over the phone:

"Sergeant Mulvaney speaking, Precinct four-fifteen. We've got a girl here who gives her name as Diane Elliot. Patrolman Schultz found her wandering near the East River. She insisted we call you. You know her?"

"Do I know her!" Jimmy exclaimed. "Hold everything. I'll be right over!"

He hung up, phoned Mitchell Field and left word for Loring that he would be a little delayed, and fairly raced from the offices, punching the button until an elevator arrived to take him down.

Outside he hailed a cab and barked, "Precinct four-fifteen!"

On the way across town, the cabby had to detour twice to avoid long silent columns of marching men in khaki. They were contingents of the regular army, moving northward; the first of the forces which Falk was flinging against the invaders in New England. There were also companies of mechanized infantry, and gun corps. At Fifth Avenue they had to wait ten minutes while a contingent of Miners and Sappers marched past. All these men wore grim, tight expressions...
