Chapter Twelve

Marcus couldn’t wait to tell Chunk his plan. He started writing a script for Dr. Boogerslinger to follow. “You’re not grounded, are you?” he asked the minute Chunk stepped on the bus.

“Naw,” Chunk said. “My mom just told me I couldn’t hang out after school until they catch the wereduck. How about you? Your mom is more paranoid than mine.”

Marcus rolled his eyes. “Tell me about it. My dad must have convinced her it wasn’t a big deal, so I didn’t get punished either, thank goodness. And I think I came up with a way for us to fool our parents, so things can go back to normal around here.” Marcus went on to explain his plan of using Simon’s translation device to fake a news report the wereduck was caught.

“Do you think it’ll work?” Chunk asked.

“Why wouldn’t it?” Marcus questioned.

Chunk shrugged. “I don’t know. Dr. Boogerslinger has a tendency to mess things up.”

“I know he’s kind of a putz,” Marcus said. “But I already started writing a script for him. All he has to do is read it.”

“What if your mom doesn’t believe it? Wouldn’t the TV news and the paper report it too?” Chunk asked.

“Way ahead of you. Remember how we did our own school newspaper in fourth grade? It looked real. My dad only gets some out of state paper for the national business section, otherwise he reads stuff online, so if we could fake a local newspaper article and photoshop a picture of something looking like a wereduck in a cage I could show my mom that as further proof and maybe between those two things, she’d buy it,” Marcus concluded. “It’s our best chance. Heck, who are we kidding? It’s our only chance, dude.”

“All right,” Chunk said, but he didn’t sound convinced.

“I’ll ask Peter to use his cell phone at recess, so I can get a hold of Dr. B and tell him the plan. We need to do this tonight. Do you think you could get to the computer lab to do the newspaper thing? You’re better at computer stuff than I am,” Marcus said.

“Yeah. I’ll figure something out,” Chunk agreed.

“Okay. Cool.” As much as Marcus was not looking forward to seeing the wereduck again, he felt better things were moving forward. As long as they could keep the wereduck tranquilized the whole trip, everything should be fine.

Marcus was thankful one of his buddies had a cell phone. Peter’s parents became quite nervous after the attack, so they got him one in case he needed to get a hold of them. The school didn’t allow kids to carry their phones around, but they made an exception with Peter because of what happened. Of course, it didn’t hurt Peter’s dad was an attorney and threatened to sue the school. Peter of course, thought he was cool and liked to flash his phone around, so Marcus hoped to convince him to let them borrow it at recess.

Marcus dug through his backpack to find Dr. B.’s card.
