Music: Buddy Holly helped to popularize the Fender Stratocaster; wrote, multi-tracked, and played his own music; used a double-stop blues turnaround lick in “That’ll Be the Day”; and played a rhythm guitar as the featured “break” (the bona fide guitar solo would come later) in “Peggy Sue.”

Technique: You can use either fingerstyle or a pick with fingers to play the triplets across alternating strings.

Bringing Doo-Wop Up Front

The sub-genre of rock known as doo-wop got its name from the sound of a group’s background singers chanting “doo-wop” (and probably while performing some rudimentary ensemble choreography) behind a lead vocalist. But to musicians and guitarists, the term doo-wop conjures up a chord progression as well: the I–vi–IV–V, or the almost-identical I–vi–ii–V. (For more on how to interpret the roman numerals representing this progression, see Chapter 6.) This arrangement of chords is not unique to the doo-wop era (it exists in centuries-old classical music as well as music that followed doo-wop). But played with a certain lilt at a certain tempo, you just can’t help (if you’re a boy) slicking back your hair and pulling on a white t-shirt and leather jacket, or (if you’re a girl) doing up your hair in a ponytail, donning a poodle skirt, and sporting saddle shoes. Man alive, those times were just a panic, weren’t they?

But musically, you should tackle the I–vi–IV–V as a viable entity because this progression helps to illustrate a few different feels, and because it’s what most music of that period sounded like. Plus, this progression is one infectious little bugger, so I don’t think you’ll mind going a few rounds with it. You can even construct your own song involving innocent and questioning teenage angst (although I don’t think the word angst existed in the ’50s).
