CHAPTER THIRTEEN
âThe secret to winning the support of large groups of people is positive thinking.â
âN. Bonaparte
People are staring at us, Aahz.â
âRelax, kid. Theyâre supposed to be staring at us.â
To illustrate his point, he nodded and waved to a knot of glowering locals. They didnât wave back.
âI donât see why I have to be the girl,â I grumbled.
âWe went through that before, kid. You walk more like a girl than I do.â
âThatâs what you and Frumple decided. I donât think I walk like a girl at all!â
âWell, letâs say I walk less like a girl than you do.â
It was hard to argue with logic like that, so I changed subjects.
âCouldnât we at least travel by less-populated streets?â I asked.
âWhy?â countered Aahz.
âWell, Iâm not too wild about having a lot of people seeing me when Iâm masquerading as a girl.â
âCâmon, kid. The whole idea is that no one would recognize you. Besides, you donât know anybody in this town. Why should you care what they think of you?â
âI just donât like it, thatâs all,â I grumbled.
âNot good enough,â Aahz asserted firmly. âBeing seen is part of our deal with Frumple. If you had any objections you should have said so before we closed the negotiations.â
âI never got a chance,â I pointed out. âBut since the subjectâs come up, I do have a few questions.â
âSuch as?â
âSuch as what are we doing?â
âWerenât you paying attention, kid? Weâre laying a false trail for â¦â
âI know that,â I interrupted. âWhat I mean is, why are we doing what weâre doing? Why are we doing Frumple a favor instead of just paying his price?â
âYou wouldnât ask that if youâd ever dealt with a Deveel before,â Aahz snorted. âTheir prices are sky-high, especially in a case like ours when they know the customer is desperate. Just be thankful we got such a good deal.â
âThatâs what I mean, Aahz. Are we sure weâve gotten a good deal?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âWell, from what Iâve been told, if you think youâve gotten a good deal from a Deveel, it usually means youâve overlooked something.â
âOf course you speak from a wide range of experience,â Aahz sneered sarcastically. âWho told you so much about dealing with Deveels?â
âYou did,â I said pointedly.
âHmmm. Youâre right, kid. Maybe I have been a little hasty.â
Normally I would have been ecstatic over having Aahz admit I was right. Somehow, however, in the current situation, it only made me feel that much more uncomfortable.
âSo what are we going to do?â I asked.
âWell, normally I deal honestly unless I think Iâm being double-crossed. This time, however, youâve raised sufficient doubt in my mind that I think we should bend the rules a little.â
âSituational ethics again?â
âRight!â
âSo what do we do?â
âStart looking for a relatively private place where we can dump these disguises without being noticed.â
I began scanning the streets and alleys ahead of us. My uneasiness was growing into panic, and it lent intensity to my search.
âI wish we had our weapons along,â I muttered.
âListen to him,â Aahz jeered. âIt wasnât that long ago you were telling me all about how magicians donât need weapons.
