The Elevator Move

“So, have you heard from Scooter? Did he call you yesterday?” Misty asked as she perched herself on a stool. We were sitting at the vintage counter in the Rock n’ Roller diner sipping chocolate milkshakes. While my short legs dangled awkwardly, Misty gracefully crossed her long legs and still managed to have both her feet touch the ground.

“No. But I had to work late last night. So, if he did, I would have missed his call. And now, I’m here with you.”

“You really need to get a cell phone so that people can get a hold of you when you’re not at home.” She looked at me slyly. “Actually, that would be the perfect excuse for you to go see him at his office. He’s a telecommunications consultant. He can set you up with a phone.”

“I don’t want to go chasing after him,” I said, conveniently leaving out that I had loitered around the coffee kiosk for a half-hour that morning hoping to run into him. “If he wants to get a hold of me, he will.”

“From what Carl said, I think you can expect a call.” Misty pulled a menu toward her. “I have to be at my cosmetology class in an hour, but I have time for some fries if you want to split them.”

“Sure,” I said. “I can always make room for fries.”

“What is it you wanted to talk about, anyway?” Misty asked. “You were really mysterious on the phone last night.”

I slurped down the last of my shake while I considered how to confront my friend. It’s not like I could just come out and say that I thought she was involved with drugs. I needed to approach the issue more delicately and carefully consider how to manage the conversation.

“Well,” Misty prompted. “You’ve been staring at your empty glass without saying a word.”

I took a deep breath and, before I could stop myself, I blurted out, “Are you a drug dealer?” Oops, so much for tact.

Misty’s eyes widened. “What?”

I put my head in my hands, took another deep breath and tried again. “I overheard someone talking last night about the package Kyle gave you. It sounded like you knew it was full of drugs.”

“No, that’s not true.” She blew out a noisy breath. “I don’t know who you heard say that, but it’s just not true.”

“Misty,” I said, patting her hand. “It’s me. You can tell me the truth.”

She pulled a napkin out of the dispenser and dabbed at her eyes. “Just give me a minute.”

While I waited for her to collect herself, Eliza placed a plate of fries in front of us. “Everything okay, here?” she asked when she saw Misty’s expression.

“Everything’s fine. She’s just sad that she finished her milkshake so quickly. She’s going through chocolate withdrawal,” I said, giving my friend a sideways glance. She cracked a smile, then started giggling.

“Well, I can do something about that,” Eliza said. “Two more shakes, coming up.”

“You always know how to make me laugh,” Misty said.
