Chapter 20
Pfeifer sat at the workbench in his basement, soldering. He’d been constructing the device since the wee hours of the morning. Now, nearly noon, the lamp next to him was beginning to bother his eyes. He leaned back in his chair and snapped it off, taking a sip from his can of Mountain Dew and relishing the cool semi-darkness. A diffused, gauzy light seeped in from around the partially closed door at the top of the stairs. It allowed him a faint view of what he’d just completed.
The sight of it made him smile.
“Mess with Pfeifer Biersman at your own peril,” he whispered, picking it up and examining the final connection. It was perfect. Just the message he wanted to send. Maybe the only kind of message the Dumonts could understand.
What the hell was Melody thinking? A restraining order? It was Lyle’s doing, Pfeifer was positive of that. Not that every last one of them didn’t want to break up his marriage. Especially Belle. But then, she wasn’t a problem anymore. Neither was Quinn. And you never know. Maybe another member of the clan would be meeting his or her maker soon. He glanced again at the device, running a caressing finger across the top.
Pfeifer was sick of feeling like one of the Dumonts’ poor relations. Assholes. He’d worked his butt off to make a good life for Melody. Could he help it if the job base in this area was getting worse by the minute?
Melody liked the finer things in life. So did he. But it was hard. Too hard, sometimes. Hadn’t any of the Dumonts ever made a mistake? Sure, he wasn’t proud of everything he’d done in his life. And, to be honest, maybe it was easier around here this last month with Melody gone. He didn’t feel that constant pressure to bring home the bread for his woman. Like any other guy, there was stuff he regretted—especially what he’d done to get his ass put in prison. He should never have agreed to help that idiot buddy of his fence all those stolen electronics. But what was the harm? He was paid good money just so they could be stored in an empty bedroom in his apartment. He even fixed a few of them—for a good price too.
Okay, it was stupid. But what was really stupid was getting caught. Even so, he’d done his time. Melody didn’t seem to mind. She wasn’t like the rest of the family. So what if he read Playboy and smoked a few cigars every now and then? It was no one’s business but his. Except that the Dumonts were probably having him followed. Yeah, that was it. That’s how they found out he wasn’t pure enough for their daughter.
Right. Pure. Tell me another.
What was pure about a couple of dykes? He wailed with laughter. Were these people morons or what? Dykes with family values? Morally upright Lezzies? Come on.
Not that it mattered. He and Melody loved each other the way normal, healthy people did.
