Chapter 4

In the end, the tax collectors came more quickly than any of them expected. Saturday afternoon, Erika entered the house in a run, forcing Julie to disentangle herself from Miriam before the prostitute could see them, only to realize her efforts had been in vain when the redhead raised an eyebrow at her. “Apologies, my lady.”

Julie blushed red, but tried to ignore her embarrassment. “What has you in such a worry?”

“They’re back, the men you’re seeking are back.”

“Are you sure?” She questioned, even as she tried to tidy up her clothes. The redhead only nodded. “They’re early, then.” Julie said as she turned to gaze at her lover.

“I think your gambit worked, and they’re scared. They probably think you’re in the capital, telling the princess what’s going on, and coming to arrest them on Monday.”

Julie smiled, and it wasn’t a nice smile. “They’ll get a surprise then.”

Once they were ready, they set out, with a nod in Erika’s direction from Julie’s part. It didn’t take too long to find the men. The shopkeepers they passed through were all too happy to point out the direction the tax collectors had moved to once they realized Julie’s intentions weren’t the best, and some even tried to follow her, but a glare made them desist.

When the two of them caught up to the men, Julie held back, considering.

“How do you want to do this?” Miriam asked, eyeing the men inside a shop.

“Follow them, maybe?” They might have some kind of lair in town, or they might even contact the baron and she would know the man was involved in their business for sure. And if they didn’t, and a fight broke out, it might be better to be out of town, away from any innocents that might get harmed.

“Doing it in front of everyone might be better for your reputation, and the princess’s.” Miriam replied, and Julie knew she was right. She still hesitated though.

What to do? She wondered. “That might be, but I’m not going to risk it. We wait for a better chance.”

Miriam nodded.

They followed the men for hours, and more than once had to hold themselves back from attacking them when their cruelty was shown. Many pled with the men as their coin was taken from them to pay for taxes that didn’t exist, but these burglars had no mercy in their hearts, they didn’t hold back from injuring those that resisted even slightly. And the city guards never intervened, not even when they were close. Julie could see they wanted to, but obviously had orders not to, and only the baron could have given them.

It made her certain she had done the right thing not to trust him. If he wasn’t part of this conspiracy, he was an incompetent fool that allowed others to abuse the people under his protection, and she would make sure he would be judged for it one way or the other after all of this was finished.

Eventually, the men started leaving the town itself, and Julie glanced at her lover, silently telling her to get ready.
