PJ had to find Robert and show him the chest. She raced to the house. Robert’s SUV was still parked in the drive. PJ sniffed the air for any hint of her brother. She heard murmured voices in the shadows. She walked toward the sound. She found Robert behind the nearest shed and stopped cold. He held the woman, Ashley, in his arms. Emotions coursed through PJ’s veins – anger, disbelief, betrayal. As PJ watched, Ashley stood on her tiptoes and they kissed. It wasn’t a quick kiss. PJ ducked behind the shed and paced in a circle. How could he? She knew things with Didi were sometimes rough, but this was different. This was cheating. Her entire opinion of her brother shattered with the image of him holding Ashley. She no longer knew who he was. She had thought she knew, but obviously she didn’t.

Their quiet voices floated to her on the night air.

“When can I see you again?” Ashley asked.

“Soon,” Robert said. “I have to find my daughter. That’s my first priority.”

“I know,” she said. “When will your wife be back?”

“I don’t know. Maybe never.”

Ashley giggled. “Did you break it off with her?”

“Not really. She wants to be apart for a while. A trial separation. How long are you in town?”

“All week. It’s fall break at the university.”

PJ peeked around the shed. The lovers kissed again. PJ squeezed her eyes shut. When she opened them again, Ashley was gone. PJ stepped into the aura of illumination coming from the light at the peak of the shed’s roof. Robert turned to her.

“PJ,” he said.

She hissed at him.

“How long were you there?”

She growled.

“It’s not what you think.”

She hissed again.

“Don’t be like that. You know me. I wouldn’t cheat on Didi. Even though she wants to separate.”

PJ howled at him.

“Ashley is an informant. Her aunt is a counterfeiter, I’m sure of it. But I have no proof.”

PJ growled from the base of her throat.

“Come on PJ, give me a break.”

PJ jumped near to him and swatted his pants leg. He dove backward. PJ stalked toward the barn, ears flattened against her head.

Robert followed. “PJ come back here. Let me talk to you.”

PJ increased her speed to a trot. She heard Robert’s feet swishing after her in the cool grass. At one point he stopped. She stopped as well, turned, and howled at him. She continued toward the barn and he resumed his pursuit.

Inside the barn, PJ went to the base of the ladder and howled at Robert. He looked up at the hayloft. “What’s up there?”

PJ howled at him and bounded up the rungs. He followed. “Someone’s been sleeping here,” he said. “Is it Elijah?”

PJ meowed once.

Robert pulled out thin latex gloves and slid them over his hands. He lifted the bedding, and the mattress, finding nothing. PJ pawed the chest beside the bed.

“What’s in there?”

PJ howled.

Robert tried to open the chest, but it was locked. “It doesn’t look like CSI was up here,” he said. “How could they have missed this area?”

PJ meowed.
