Chapter Twenty-one

The next day at breakfast, Roger caused a stir. “When will our rooms be completed, Jakus?”

“Grundler Jakus is very busy,” Weaverkin said sharply.

“I need my privacy at the end of the day,” Roger said testily.

“Quarters come last,” Jakus stated, his deep voice rumbling across the room. “There is a plan.”

“One that includes building a stillroom before the Hands’ quarters?” Roger snapped.

Jakus frowned at him. “The stillroom, dining hall,” he gestured away. “All of this is part of the foundation for the next floor. Quarters are up top. Can’t make a top before the bottom. ” He frowned at Roger as he drank down his tea. With a tsk of his own, he left the table.

Longbow looked like he wanted to speak, but Weaverkin stood drawing all their attention. She glared at Roger for a long hot minute. The table remained silent. She turned and left without another word.

“Today, we will be starting on the vegetable garden,” Beatrice spoke lightly into the heavy silence.

“Are we done with the herb garden?” River asked.

“We’ve done as much as we can for this time of year.”

The mood around the table lifted slowly, but River couldn’t wait to leave the dining hall. Hyssop was very excited to be working on another new garden. They had to go foraging for stakes again. Along the way, both Hyssop and Beatrice found plants that they wanted to dig up.

“Bog berry?” River asked with a flinch. “That doesn’t sound very good.”

“They are quite tart, but they make wonderful preserves,” Beatrice said. “We’ll need to put this one outside the wall, so it can sit in the wetter ground.”

By lunch, River’s digging muscles were very sore, and she was looking forward to a break. As they had worked this morning, she had observed a deep bond forming between Beatrice and Hyssop. They had the same love for plants and growing things. It made River feel a little jealous to see someone else getting so much of the Hand’s attention. But like Candle, Hyssop seemed a little lost, so River couldn’t blame her for needing the attention of someone as kind as Beatrice.

They sat down to eat at midday in a prickly silence. Roger tsked before he even tasted his food. Weaverkin glared at him, Cooperkin and Candle. Silence stretched long and hard between them.

“Hand Beatrice found a bog berry plant,” River announced. She wanted to start the conversation on a very easy topic.

“I’ve never heard of that,” Candle said. “Is it good?”

Discussion on the ways to prepare bog berry meandered around the table during the meal. It set an easier tone. River could feel the tension level inching downward. Jakus hadn’t said anything. Roger sat silent as a hot, angry stone. When the conversation flagged, Jakus made another wonderful announcement.

“Heart Weaverkin, the library is now complete,” Jakus said.

“Library!” River squealed. “That is so wonderful. Thank you so much Jakus, um Grundler.”

Jakus smiled at her.

“Yes, thank you for your hard work, Jakus. It is very much appreciated,” Weaverkin added.

Roger left the table and stomped away.
