Austin couldn’t help but sense something inside him had changed—again. The energy still flowed restlessly, but with a new feeling of power, a different surge coursing through him. He had the dream again. Images of the storm and flashes of what felt like memories shook him awake, but slipped away before he could remember them.

Today, Braylin wanted to show Austin a special room in the Sacrarium. All he mentioned about it was something about gateways. Padding down the hall with Braylin and surprisingly Aviana, Austin rubbed his aching head. They walked down the hall, through a heavily locked door, and down a decrepit set of stairs leading to an older part of the Sacrarium. When he entered the room, Austin almost gasped. The circular chamber had three additional doors matching the one they’d just passed through, just like the room in his dreams.

In the center of the room, a single pedestal stood alone, displaying what appeared to be a translucent orb glowing in multiple colors. The orb! He walked over to the pedestal with the orb. “I’ve seen this thing before. What is it?”

“It’s called Template View,” Aviana enlightened him. “Inside the shell lies the residual energy from the magic the elders used to expand the universe and then divide it into multiple realms. Its essence is also binding the separated worlds together. Four different universes, four different worlds—or ‘realms.’ Ergo, the whole universe is called the ‘Quadrõcosm.’ Without the View, the realms would collapse on each other and destroy the Quadrõcosm.”

“Realms?”

Waving a hand around the room, Aviana waited for Austin to read the inscriptions above each door. Each gateway had its own inscription on it: Δωδεκάθεον, The Empyrean Shardlands, Maleficus Orbis, and lastly Villhilium, the doorway they walked through.

“Hold up.” Austin raised a hand, holding back an amused chuckle. “You’re telling me that we live in a multiverse? Like, parallel worlds and stuff? C’mon, that’s ridiculous—and totally overused in media entertainment.”

Braylin and Aviana glanced at each other and exchanged an unsurprised snort. “The United Alliance does everything it can to make you doubt, even forget the truth,” Braylin patiently explained. “They have the power to rewrite history and its truths, but in reality, the universe is vastly larger than you or any human are taught. Besides humans and plenaries, there are celestials and ophanim. They exist in the other realms. Technically, we’re all—”

“Are celestials, like, all-powerful beings?” Austin interjected.

Braylin shook his head. “Their powers have their own limits, just like us. And they—”

“What about the ophanim? How do you even spell that?”

“Please stop interrupting me,” Braylin asked politely.

Austin shut his mouth. When Braylin tried to continue, something shattered up the stairs and down the hall. Muttering something about Alton and Maisie, Braylin asked Aviana to finish the lesson in his place while he checked it out. Austin wasn’t sure if he should be really glad or really worried.

“Who lives in that realm?” He pointed to the door labeled Maleficus Orbis.

Aviana shook her head sadly. “The Maleficî. They were thaumaturgies—magicians, you could say.
