Chapter Ten

Rory had fucked up. Royally. He’d let his mouth get the better of him, and now it felt like he and Nate were standing on opposite sides of a goddamn crater. He should have just kept his feelings to his fucking self rather than flaying himself open and bleeding all over Nate.

But he was the king of fucking up. He always had been.

He was smart, and he was clever, and he was an amazing strategist. He was also amazing at negotiations, which was why he was the club liaison. But when it came to his heart? Rory had never been anything other than a total disaster.

So he supposed he deserved whatever Nate was going to throw at him.

But feelings aside, they all needed to check their personal baggage if they were going to make Rory’s plan a success. He had waited for the sound of Nate’s door closing before he found the back door, and after some tentative exploring, he mapped out the size of the deck, then the stairs, which were just wide enough for him to sit.

From the sounds in front of him, he could tell the house was closed in pretty tight by the woods. There wasn’t much of a breeze, and the air was thick with swampy humidity. He could hear the sounds of birds, buzzing insects, and very far off, running water.

It wasn’t his ideal, but he could understand exactly why Nate had made himself a little home out there. A life like the one he lived—like they all lived—meant they felt like outsiders all the time. Rory had never been able to really connect with any of his peers—no matter how hard he tried—because they never really got him.

He did better with nameless, pointless hookups and the occasional friends with benefits that knew better than to expect anything out of him except sex every now and again. He liked the thought that he could float in and out of their lives, and if he went missing, no one would come looking for him.

Not because he couldn’t care about people—not because he didn’t—but because it was safer for them. If he dropped his guard and let people close, his brother’s enemies would be able to pinpoint exactly who to use against him.

Just like they’d done with Aaron.

So he kept himself at a distance until Nate. Until the fantasy of having Nate became a reality, and Rory actually thought he could have something for himself. And, like usual, he’d ruined it because for all that he could strategize like a genius, he never thought before he spoke. He was his heart’s worst enemy.

It wasn’t Nate’s fault for saying nothing, even if his silence after Rory’s confession had hurt. Rory knew he was giving Nate no time at all to process what he’d said, but he was tired of being in pain. That panicked moment of thinking Nate was about to reject him took over and he’d lashed out.

And just like every other time he’d done
