Chapter Sixteen

The afternoon sun reflected off the tranquil water and Alison smiled as she settled on her couch, a glass of orange juice on a coaster on the coffee table in front of her. The almost perfect vista never failed to soothe her. The view from her condo had been great, but there was something about sitting in her own home that eased her perpetually anxious soul.

I really should decide what to do with that condo. Wait. What I am doing? I am finally letting things be slow, and I instantly try to fill my head with more stuff to stress over.

She chuckled and shook her head. Perhaps she should sit on the edge of her jetty and simply watch the water, or even take up fishing. It’d be an interesting way to fill her time off.

Despite Hana’s accusations, she had taken a few days off. She deserved it after helping the FBI capture a dangerous criminal, but she still had a hard time shutting her mind off or resisting the urge to call around asking about trouble in Seattle.

Her friend was half-right. There was no way she would be able to clock out for any significant length of time and enjoy her honeymoon with her current state of mind and habit of worrying. She needed to work her way to being able to take an extended time out—perhaps even a month—for her honeymoon. Stepping away from the day-to-day running of the company now and again in the lead-up to the wedding would be a good way to accomplish that goal.

I have a few minutes. I might as well check in.

Alison gave in to the impulse and pulled her phone out. She dialed Shay.

“Hey, Alison,” her mother answered. “I meant to call you about helping the FBI. Your dad joked about Brownstone arresting gnome masterminds being a new family tradition. Now, I feel like I need to find some gnome super-criminal and stop him, too.”

“Oh, yeah, that. I didn’t call about that and the FBI did most of the hard work. I only blew some guys up.”

“That’s basically what it means to be a Brownstone. You blow things up and eat delicious food afterwards.” Shay chuckled. “If you’re not calling to brag, what are you calling about? Not that I mind, of course.”

“I simply wanted to check in. I’ll have a sibling in only a few months, after all.” She exhaled a happy sigh. “It’s hard for me to believe at times, and I can only imagine what you’re going through as the clock ticks down. You always seem okay when I call, but I wanted to be sure.”

Shay scoffed. “That’s the thing. I’m not going through anything. Sure, I’m not as mobile I used to be, but that’s a temporary problem. The earlier months weren’t always fun, but I didn’t have as much morning sickness as some people I know. The cravings were annoying, but I haven’t really had to deal with those in a while.”

Alison leaned back on the couch and crossed her legs.
