Chapter Seventeen

Knuckles

I woke still dirty from the work I'd done yesterday, but gratefully I felt rested. There was a calm that surrounded us. We had been threatened in numerous ways but we survived. We came out victorious. When I moved away, Maya snuggled deeper under the covers and used her arm to block the late morning sun.

After I'd showered and dressed, I spent a few moments just gazing at the angel that slept in my bed. If I'd known her life was in danger yesterday, I would've dropped everything to intervene, to make her safe. The pride I felt in knowing that she had protected herself was immense. When Pres had pressured her, she'd rolled over. It wasn't weakness that made her do that. It was strength.

She recovered so fast because she knew how to fight. I wanted to be the one to cheer her on. I wanted to watch her win battles she didn't think she could.

She moaned in her sleep, shifting a little, and her eyes blinked open. When she saw me, she gasped, like she thought I was someone else. But as the haze cleared and her eyes opened all the way, her lips parted and she gifted me the most dazzling smile. "Hendrix, what are you doing?"

"Watching you."

She stretched her arms above her head and sat up, pushing the blanket away. "Why?"

"You're beautiful."

Before we’d gone to sleep, she had changed into a pair of soft shorts and one of my t-shirts. The shorts were hidden by the baggy way my shirt fit her, but her long legs were on display. She caught me looking and tossed the blanket back over them. "You know what else we forgot? Razors. I have leg hair. You can't look."

Amusement filtered through me and I stepped closer. I tipped her chin up to kiss her, and pushed the blanket away while she was distracted. I broke the kiss and knelt down between her legs, running my hands up the length of them. "They're my legs, angel. Don't forget that. I don't care whether they're hairy or not. I want to look at them."

"It's not… feminine."
