CHAPTER 16

AZERICK STARED AT SOUTHPORT’S closed gates and the plumed helmets of the men guarding it from the parapet. “That bodes ill for the city.”

Daebian nodded. “What little I’d seen of these soldiers, I expected the city would fall, but not this fast. What now?”

“We knock on the door,” Azerick replied with a grin.

When they got within a hundred feet, a soldier atop the parapet shouted, “Stay where you are. This city is closed to all traffic.”

“By whose order?” Azerick called back.

“By the divine will of the emperor and empress of Syrna.”

“I do not recognize their authority in this land. On behalf of King Miles of Valeria, I demand your people leave this city, without plunder or prisoners.”

Daebian glanced at his father. “That’s a bit presumptuous of you, don’t you think?”

Azerick shrugged. “I’m sure he would have said much the same thing if he were here.”

The soldier shouted back, “There are no kings. There stands no man nor gods above the emperor and empress. Return from whence you came and prepare to embrace the Order when we come for you. Your lives will be better for it.”

“I’m really starting to dislike these people,” Azerick said to Daebian.

“They have a way about them that truly gets under the skin. Now what, oh legendary sorcerer?”

Azerick raised several protective wards and drew in the Source. “I knock harder.”

Daebian looked at his father and shook his head. “I don’t recommend it.”

His warning came too late, not that Azerick was of a mind to heed it. He thrust his staff forward and launched a silver ray of power at the gate with all the strength he could muster. The beam struck the barrier with little effect other than a loud clunk before the gates swung slowly outward.

Daebian frowned. “Well, that was spectacularly disappointing.”

Horns blared as Order soldiers marched out through the gates, moving in perfect lockstep.

Azerick grimaced and raked lightning across their front ranks, the bolts so brilliant they dazzled the eyes and lit up the area like a second sun. The soldiers halted, and a shimmering nimbus surrounded their shields. The lightning struck the wards with another brilliant display but did no damage to the troops on the other side.

“Buggering hell!” Azerick shouted as the soldiers advanced once more.

“Told you,” Daebian quipped.

He clawed at the ground with arcane fingers and tore rocks and cobblestones from the earth and sent them sailing skyward. Seconds later, they returned as flaming meteors trailing smoke streamers. The soldiers tilted their shields upward as blazing rocks bombarded the squad and surrounding area with fiery, kinetic energy. The meteors cratered the ground around the men and shattered against their wards.

“I’m sure you don’t want to hear this anymore than I wish to say it, but I suggest a hasty retreat,” Daebian said.

Azerick glared his fury at the invaders before replying with a curt nod. He began casting one last spell, hoping to slow down the enemy. Before he could complete it, javelins arced out and formed a rough ring around him and Daebian.
