Chapter Nineteen
The little bird
Of all seven kingdoms, Yrythia is the most devout. They were the first to adopt the new religion, handed down from the Prime, and embraced it fully. They built shrines in every city, town and village, encouraging the Yrythian people to worship the Fates every day.
For this reason, the Prime Council decided to locate Fort Castor, the main Peacekeeper stronghold, on the outskirts of the Yrythian capital, Calyx. Not only was it a central location, giving direct access to four of the remaining six kingdoms, it also consolidated the power of the Peacekeepers with that of the Fates, and therefore, indirectly, strengthened the Primeâs link with the Guards.
Over time, Calyx became seen not only as the capital city of Yrythia, but also as the Prime City of Terrathia.
A hidden history of Terrathia, introduction to Chapter 3 by Hollister Tremaine
âNo, thereâs no purpose in going to Calyx,â Malakiah explained slowly. âCommander Fioddar left the capital and moved back to Fort Castor.â
Rowan shook her head, the creases across her forehead becoming more prominent. âBut the Prime is in Calyx. Sheâs the leader of the kingdoms. We need to give her the information so that she can deploy the Peacekeepers. Why canât you see that?â
âBecause youâre wrong Rowan, it is that simple. The Prime does not control the Peacekeepers. That was deliberately written into the Terrathian Constitution to protect us all from tyranny. Only the rightful commander can give direct orders to the Guard.â Malakiahâs face was red and his eyes bulged slightly.
Rowan snorted. âYouâve not been yourself since you woke up. There arenât conspiracies around every corner. We can trust those that govern us, especially the Prime. Look at how she treated Maud. She could have executed her but chose to help instead.â
âIâm sorry Rowan, my decision is final. I have seen what leaders are capable of doing to our world when they put their own agenda before the needs of the people. Trust me when I tell you that you do not yet have the experience to see the true nature of people.â Malakiahâs voice was softer but his body language remained strong.
There was silence as Rowan considered what he had said. She paced, her heart raced and her muscles were tense. âHow can we trust you, Malakiah?â She looked around the room, at the faces of all those gathered for the journey. âWe donât really know you. You turn up to rescue Kai and then insert yourself into our group.â
Malakiah flinched at her appraisal, his chin dropped slightly and he rubbed the back of his hand subconsciously. He made to speak, to reassure her that his actions were in the best interests of Terrathia, but Rowan refused him the opportunity.
She continued, emphasising her points with wild gestures. âWe know nothing about your past, except that somehow you know my mother. That is the only reason that I listen to you. Everyone in this room has the sense that you are keeping information from them, facts that are most likely relevant to everything that is happening.
